Chapter 2: Box 319

The knife robber shoved the boy away.

“Open the exits!” he shouted.

The boy stumbled, but the woman caught him before he fell.

“I can’t,” the boy whispered. “My dad said once the doors close, only the truth opens them.”

The second robber rushed toward the vault corridor, dragging the bank manager up by his collar.

“Box 319,” he snapped. “Now.”

The manager’s face had gone pale.

“I don’t have access.”

The robber pressed the knife near his throat.

“Then who does?”

The manager’s eyes moved.

Not to the tellers.

Not to the guards.

To the boy.

The lobby seemed to breathe in all at once.

The boy reached inside his hoodie pocket and pulled out a small silver key hanging from a worn leather string.

The woman behind him gasped.

“Eli…”

The boy looked at her.

“I’m sorry, Mom.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You promised me you wouldn’t use that.”

“I promised Dad I would if they came back.”

The robber stared at the key.

Then he laughed, but this time the sound was thinner.

Less certain.

“You’re going to open it for us.”

Eli shook his head.

“No.”

The knife robber stepped forward.

The mother rose in front of her son.

“Touch him again and you’ll have to go through me.”

For the first time, the boy looked truly scared.

Not for himself.

For her.

The robber lifted the knife.

Then the old bronze clock above the vault struck twelve.

A hidden speaker crackled.

A man’s recorded voice filled the bank.

“If this message is playing, then my son is alive, and the men who killed me have returned.”

The mother covered her mouth.

Eli closed his eyes.

May you like

He knew that voice.

His father.
