Chapter 2: The Rule Everyone Remembered
The new dealership was called Hayes Premier Motors.
From the outside, it looked like any other luxury showroom. Glass walls. Marble floors. Expensive cars under soft white lights.
But inside, everything felt different.
There were no cold stares.
No salespeople whispering about who “looked rich enough.”
No owner barking rules from the corner.
On the first morning, I gathered the staff around the pearl-white SUV.
Some were young.
Some were experienced.
A few had worked at dealerships where fear was normal.
I looked at them and said, “People do not come here just to buy cars. They come here to be seen.”
A salesman named Brad raised his hand.
“What if someone just wants to sit inside and take pictures?”
I smiled.
“Then let them.”
He blinked. “Even if they’re not buying?”
“Especially then.”
The room went quiet.
I continued, “A person who cannot buy today may become a buyer tomorrow. A child who sits in a car today may remember your kindness twenty years from now.”
No one spoke.
Then the front doors opened.
A delivery driver walked in wearing a faded jacket and work boots. He looked uncomfortable the moment he stepped onto the marble floor.
Two salespeople glanced at him.
Then Brad stepped forward.
“Good morning, sir. Welcome in.”
The man looked surprised.
“I’m just looking. I’m not buying anything.”
Brad smiled.
“That’s perfectly fine. Let me know if you want to sit in anything.”
The man stared at him like he had never heard those words before.
From across the showroom, Victoria watched quietly.
Later that afternoon, she came to my office.
“You changed them fast,” she said.
I shook my head.
“No. I reminded them who they were before bad managers taught them fear.”
Victoria’s expression softened.
Then she placed a folder on my desk.
“We have a problem.”
I opened it.
Inside were legal papers, old employee complaints, customer statements, and security stills from my former dealership.
