CHAPTER 22 The Twin in the Dark

Emergency lights flashed red along the hospital corridor.
Alvarez ordered everyone away from the doors.
I heard footsteps outside Catherine’s room.
Then a gunshot.
Lily pressed her face against Natalie’s shoulder.
The backup power activated ten seconds later.
A federal officer lay injured near the nurses’ station.
Catherine’s room remained secure.
But Lena was gone.
So was the black lighthouse ring.
Security cameras showed her running toward the stairwell during the blackout.
Adrian wanted to follow.
Alvarez stopped him.
“We do not know whether that was Lena.”
“She was standing beside us.”
“Until the lights went out.”
The woman on the phone could have been Evelyn.
The woman who escaped could have been either twin.
That uncertainty was exactly what Hollis’s organization needed.
Twenty minutes later, we received a video message.
Lena appeared seated in an empty room with her wrists tied.
A bruise darkened one side of her face.
Behind her stood another woman.
They were nearly identical.
Evelyn wore her hair shorter, and a thin scar crossed her eyebrow. Otherwise, she could have walked into the Samuel Mercer Center and taken Lena’s place without anyone noticing.
“I have spent my life watching my sister receive everything meant for me,” Evelyn said.
Lena lifted her head. “Do not listen to her.”
Evelyn struck the chair, not Lena.
The sound made Lily flinch.
“Samuel chose the wrong child,” Evelyn continued. “He rescued Lena because he believed she was innocent. He left me with Hollis.”
Catherine stepped toward the screen.
“That is not what happened.”
Evelyn smiled.
“You remember me.”
“I tried to take both of you.”
“You took the child who was easier to carry.”
Catherine’s face collapsed.
Evelyn explained that Hollis had raised her inside private schools, political homes, and secured facilities. He taught her surveillance, financial manipulation, and psychological control.
Robert visited her.
He told her she was his daughter.
He also told her Samuel Mercer had chosen Madeline, Adrian, and Lena while abandoning her.
“You want the ledger,” I said toward the screen.
“I want what the ledger leads to.”
“What is that?”
“The original Mercer account.”
Adrian frowned. “There is no original account.”
Evelyn laughed.
“Samuel built Mercer Maritime with money taken from Hollis’s first operation. He hid it outside every bank and government system. That account contains records of every official, judge, doctor, and corporation Hollis ever purchased.”
It was not merely money.
It was proof.
“Where is Lena?” I asked.
“Beneath the place where your mother died.”
The video ended.
Catherine knew the location.
An abandoned mountain road in northern Pennsylvania.
Alvarez prepared a rescue operation, but I no longer trusted every member of his team.
Neither did he.
We selected six agents whose histories had been independently verified.
Adrian insisted on coming.
So did Natalie.
I left Lily with two guards at Mercer House.
She argued.
I did not negotiate.
Before we departed, she hugged me tightly.
“Bring Lena back.”
“I will.”
“And do not believe everything Evelyn says.”
“Why?”
Lily looked toward Samuel’s old office.
“Because she lied about one thing.”
“What?”
“She said Great-Grandfather saved the wrong twin.”
“How do you know?”
“I found two names in the violin music. Lena and Evelyn.”
The coded score had been written before Samuel’s death.
Samuel had known both women were alive.
Perhaps he had not abandoned Evelyn.
Perhaps he had been searching for her.
We reached the mountain road after midnight.
An abandoned memorial stood where Elizabeth’s car had gone over the edge.
Fresh tire tracks led toward a closed tunnel beneath the mountain.
Inside, we found Lena’s chair.
Empty.
Her restraints had been cut.
On the wall, someone had written a message in black paint.
MADELINE, YOUR MOTHER SURVIVED THE CRASH.
Beneath it was a photograph.
Elizabeth stood beside the wrecked car.
Alive.
The image had been taken three days after her reported death.

On the back, she had written:
SAMUEL FOUND ME. HE CANNOT KNOW I REMEMBER WHAT HE DID.
