Chapter 2 — The Empire Begins to Collapse Around Him
Nathan refused to leave.
"This company is nothing without me."
His voice echoed through the silent boardroom.
"I built every acquisition."
"I negotiated every merger."
"I made Sterling Global."
"No," I answered.
"You managed opportunities my family financed long before you knew they existed."
He slammed both hands against the table.
"I'll sue every one of you."
Corporate counsel calmly slid another folder toward him.
"We anticipated that."
Inside were hundreds of signed agreements.
Emails.
Bank transfers.
Board approvals.
Every major decision Nathan believed he had initiated had required approval from a voting trust he never knew existed.
My trust.
His face grew pale.
Celeste finally spoke.
"Nathan..."
"We should leave."
He ignored her.
"You knew?"
She hesitated.
"No..."
"I thought..."
"You told me everything belonged to you."
The silence answered her.
For the first time...
She realized she had attached herself to a man whose fortune had never legally existed.
Her eyes drifted to the emerald necklace.
Then to me.
Slowly...
She unclasped it.
Without speaking, she walked across the room and placed it gently into my hand.
"I'm sorry."
Nathan stared at her in disbelief.
"You can't seriously be walking away."
She looked at him with quiet pity.
"I never loved poverty."
Then she left.
Without another word.
Nathan stood alone in the middle of the boardroom.
His phone suddenly vibrated.
Then again.
And again.
Private banking.
Investment partners.
Luxury lenders.
Real estate managers.
Each notification carried the same message.
Accounts frozen pending ownership verification.
His company apartment...
No longer authorized.
His corporate jet...
Canceled.
His security team...
Reassigned.
Even the driver waiting downstairs...
Had already received new instructions.
Nathan whispered something almost too quietly to hear.
