Chapter 2: The Hospital Question

The emergency room smelled like disinfectant, stale coffee, and fear.

Ethan was taken through a set of double doors before Claire and I could follow. A nurse asked us about allergies, medications, and previous symptoms. I answered as best I could, but my thoughts kept returning to the basement.

The cold handle.

The darkness.

That weak breath.

A doctor named Elena Morris came out forty minutes later.

Her expression was controlled, but serious.

“Ethan is stable.”

Claire gripped my hand so tightly her nails dug into my skin.

“He’s severely dehydrated,” Dr. Morris continued. “He also has a high fever and significant abdominal pain. We’re running imaging and blood tests now.”

“What caused it?” I asked.

“We don’t know yet. But locking him in a cold basement for several hours likely worsened his condition.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Several hours.

Not a few minutes.

Not a brief punishment.

Hours.

A uniformed officer appeared beside the nurses’ station. He introduced himself as Officer Daniel Reyes. Standing with him was a hospital social worker named Marissa Cole.

“We need to ask you some questions,” Officer Reyes said.

I told him everything.

The unanswered calls.

Rebecca’s confession.

Matthew’s statement.

The locked door.

The missing phone.

When I finished, he asked, “Did Ethan have access to water?”

“No.”

“Bathroom?”

“No.”

“Any way to leave the room?”

“No.”

Marissa wrote something down.

Claire’s voice shook.

“She knew he had allergies. She knew he sometimes got sick fast. She knew he had an emergency phone.”

Officer Reyes looked up.

“Where is the phone now?”

I stared at him.

“I don’t know.”

That detail hit me harder than I expected.

Rebecca had taken the one thing Ethan could have used to reach us.

Two hours later, Dr. Morris returned.

“The imaging shows acute appendicitis.”

My knees nearly gave out.

“He needs surgery tonight,” she said. “The appendix has not ruptured, but it’s close. Another few hours could have changed the outcome.”

Claire covered her mouth and turned away.

I leaned against the wall.

Another few hours.

Rebecca had called him dramatic while an infection was building inside his body.

Before the surgical team arrived, we were allowed to see him.

Ethan looked tiny beneath the white hospital blanket.

He opened his eyes when I touched his hand.

“Dad?”

“I’m here.”

“I tried to call you.”

My throat tightened.

“I know, buddy.”

“Aunt Rebecca took my phone.”

Claire sat on the other side of the bed.

“What happened after she took it?”

Ethan blinked slowly.

“I told her my stomach hurt. She said I was jealous because Matthew got more presents.”

He paused, breathing carefully.

“Then she put me downstairs.”

“Did she come back?”

His eyes filled with tears.

“Once.”

Claire leaned closer.

“What did she say?”

Ethan looked toward the door as if Rebecca might be standing there.

“She said if I kept making noise, she’d leave me there until morning.”

No one spoke.

A monitor beeped steadily beside him.

Officer Reyes stood outside the room, listening.

And I knew that this was no longer a family misunderstanding.

It was a crime.
