Chapter 14 - THE FIRST LEAK

The hospital locked down the maternity and neonatal floors before sunrise.

Security reviewed badge records.

Staff were reminded that unauthorized photography and disclosure of patient information could result in termination and legal consequences.

Emma’s room was moved away from the public corridor.

Lila remained in NICU.

Her breathing improved slowly.

That was the only fact Emma cared about for the first twelve hours.

Everything else waited.

Nathan stayed in a hotel across the street.

He came to the hospital only when Emma or the NICU staff approved it.

He never asked to sleep in Emma’s room.

He never used his name to change visitation rules.

He never brought flowers.

He brought coffee for Rachel once and got the order wrong.

Rachel drank it anyway because she considered the error educational.

On the second afternoon, Lila needed less breathing support.

Emma finally slept for three uninterrupted hours.

When she woke, Claire Donovan was sitting by the window with a folder closed on her lap.

Emma looked at it.

“What now?”

Claire’s expression was careful.

“Good news first.”

“Lila?”

“Still improving.”

Emma exhaled.

“That is the only good news I need.”

Claire nodded.

“The rest can wait.”

Emma looked at the folder again.

“No.”

“Emma.”

“If someone is photographing my daughter’s hallway, it does not wait.”

Claire opened the folder.

“Hospital security identified the person who took the photograph.”

Emma’s heartbeat quickened.

“Who?”

“A contract transport aide.”

Nathan entered the room at that moment with permission from a nurse.

He stopped when he saw Claire.

“Do you want me to leave?”

Emma shook her head.

“This concerns the leak.”

Nathan closed the door.

Claire continued.

“The aide says a freelance photo broker offered him five thousand dollars for any image showing Nathan on the maternity floor.”

Emma’s face hardened.

“Who told the broker where we were?”

“We do not know yet.”

Nathan sat in the far chair.

Claire looked at him.

“Your counsel found something that may answer a different question.”

“The first leak.”

Nathan’s expression changed.

“The medical bill?”

“Yes.”

Claire removed printed email headers.

“Marcus gained access to the archived executive mailbox under the litigation order.”

Emma leaned forward despite the pull in her incision.

Claire immediately noticed.

“Do not move like that.”

Emma glared.

Claire moved the papers closer herself.

“On the night Nathan discovered the pregnancy, he emailed the photograph of your medical bill to Malcolm at 3:41 a.m.”

Nathan looked at Emma.

“I told you that.”

“Yes.”

Claire continued.

“At 3:53, Malcolm forwarded it.”

Nathan went still.

“To whom?”

Claire placed the page down.

Olivia Grant.

Emma stared.

Nathan’s face lost color.

“What did he say?”

Claire read the message.

N found this tonight.

Do not contact him until I understand where E went.

Preserve the attachment.

Olivia responded at 4:02.

She is pregnant?

Malcolm:

Apparently.

Olivia:

Did she know at the gala?

Malcolm:

Likely.

Olivia:

Then why didn’t she tell him?

Malcolm:

Not relevant right now.

Nathan closed his eyes.

Emma felt a wave of anger so clean it almost calmed her.

Claire continued.

The next morning, Olivia wrote:

If Emma uses the baby to pull him back, what happens to the transition plan?

Malcolm replied:

Nothing if we manage the narrative.

Emma’s hand tightened around the bedsheet.

Nathan looked sick.

“What transition plan?”

Claire shook her head.

“We do not know.”

Nathan spoke through clenched teeth.

“The contingency memo.”

“Possibly.”

Claire turned another page.

There was more.

Six weeks later, after Nathan fired Olivia from the foundation, Malcolm sent her the medical bill again.

His message read:

Keep this off personal devices.

If N restores E to foundation influence, we may need proof she concealed material family information while acting as trustee.

Emma stared at the sentence.

“They planned to use my pregnancy against me.”

Claire nodded.

“That is how it reads.”

Nathan stood.

He moved toward the window because he seemed unable to remain still.

Emma watched him.

“You gave Malcolm the weapon.”

Nathan turned.

“Yes.”

There was no excuse.

No explanation.

Just yes.

Emma’s eyes filled.

“And then he gave it to her.”

“Yes.”

Nathan looked as if he wanted to cross the room.

He did not.

Claire continued.

“We also recovered the draft of the tabloid pitch.”

Emma stared.

“From Malcolm?”

“From Olivia’s foundation archive.”

Nathan’s jaw tightened.

The draft described Emma as manipulative.

It suggested she had hidden the pregnancy to gain financial leverage.

It used the phrase harmless dance.

It attached the medical bill.

The author field showed Olivia Grant.

The document history showed revisions from MVOSS-EXEC.

Emma looked at Nathan.

“So they both leaked it.”

Claire answered carefully.

“The evidence strongly indicates they prepared the material together.”

Nathan lowered his head.

Emma felt no triumph.

She had wanted certainty once.

Certainty did not feel clean.

It felt like discovering the exact address where pain had been mailed from.

Claire opened another folder.

“There is one more recovered item.”

Emma almost laughed.

“There is always one more.”

“This came from your original phone backup.”

Emma frowned.

“My phone?”

“Rachel told us you sometimes photographed Nathan’s screen when messages bothered you.”

Emma looked at Rachel, who had just entered with water.

Rachel shrugged.

“You asked me to find anything old.”

Claire displayed a photograph Emma had taken months before leaving New York.

Olivia’s message was visible.

She still doesn’t suspect anything.

Emma had seen the full forensic thread already.

Claire zoomed in on the top edge of the image.

A previous notification was partially visible above Olivia’s message.

Emma had never noticed it.

M. Voss:

Need her out of tomorrow’s review.

Emma leaned closer.

“What review?”

Marcus had matched the date to a foundation calendar.

The next day, Emma had been scheduled to attend a vendor budget meeting.

She remembered canceling.

Why had she canceled?

Then the memory returned.

Nathan had called from the airport and asked her to host a last-minute lunch for an investor’s wife.

Emma had been furious.

He told her it was important.

She had given up the foundation meeting and hosted the lunch.

Nathan had later thanked her with flowers.

Emma looked at the old photograph.

“Who asked Nathan to send me to the lunch?”

Claire had the answer.

“Malcolm.”

Nathan sat down slowly.

“I remember.”

Emma looked at him.

“He told me the investor’s wife was offended that no Whitmore family member had contacted her.”

“Was she?”

Nathan’s face hardened.

“We are checking.”

Claire shook her head.

“We already did.”

Everyone looked at her.

“The investor’s wife says she never requested the lunch.”

Emma felt cold.

Claire continued.

“She says Malcolm’s assistant invited her and described it as Emma’s idea.”

Rachel whispered:

“They moved you like pieces.”

Emma looked at Nathan.

“And you helped.”

Nathan swallowed.

“Yes.”

He pressed his palms together.

“I thought I was asking my wife for a favor.”

“You never asked why I had to be the one to give something up.”

“No.”

Emma turned toward the window.

For years, she had interpreted every interruption as evidence that Nathan did not value her.

That had been true.

But now she saw another layer.

Malcolm had learned that Nathan would sacrifice Emma’s time first because Nathan had trained him to expect it.

Manipulation worked because it followed an existing groove.

Nathan created the groove.

Malcolm used it.

Olivia deepened it.

Emma had finally stepped out of it.

Claire’s phone rang.

She checked the screen.

“Caleb Grant’s lawyer.”

Emma nodded.

“Take it.”

Claire stepped into the hall.

She returned three minutes later.

“Caleb delivered the encrypted drive.”

Nathan looked up.

“What is on it?”

“Vendor invoices, internal communications, and recordings.”

“Recordings of whom?”

“Malcolm.”

Emma felt the room change.

Claire continued.

“Caleb says Olivia gave him the drive last night.”

Nathan stared.

“Why would she do that?”

“Because her own lawyers told her the email archive makes her look like a co-conspirator.”

Emma’s expression remained hard.

“So now she wants to cooperate.”

“Apparently.”

“After leaking my pregnancy.”

“Yes.”

“After using my credentials.”

“Yes.”

“After trying to take my husband.”

Claire paused.

“That part is not the Attorney General’s jurisdiction.”

Rachel snorted.

Emma almost smiled.

Then Claire gave her the real message.

“Olivia wants to meet you.”

Nathan immediately said:

“No.”

Emma turned toward him.

He stopped.

His face changed.

“Sorry.”

Emma held his gaze.

He corrected himself.

“I do not think it is safe for you to meet her without counsel.”

Claire nodded.

“That is also my advice.”

Emma looked at the incubator photo on her phone.

Lila was improving.

She would not let anyone drag her back into chaos without rules.

“I will meet her.”

Nathan’s jaw tightened.

Emma continued.

“With Claire.”

“On video.”

“Recorded through counsel.”

“And you will not be there.”

Nathan looked at her.

“Okay.”

The answer came quietly.

Emma looked back at Claire.

“Tell Olivia she gets one chance to tell the whole truth.”

“And if she lies?”

Emma’s expression went cold.

“Then she can explain it to investigators without me.”

Olivia appeared on the video screen at 10:00 the next morning.

She was not alone.

Her attorney sat on one side.

Caleb Grant’s attorney sat on the other.

Claire Donovan sat beside Emma in the hospital family conference room.

A court reporter joined remotely to create a formal record by agreement of counsel.

Nathan was with Lila in the NICU.

Emma had asked him to stay there.

He had not asked why.

Olivia looked at Emma through the screen.

For several seconds, neither woman spoke.

The last time they had been in the same room, Olivia had been dancing with Emma’s husband beneath crystal lights.

Now Emma wore a hospital robe beneath a cardigan.

Her face was pale from surgery and lack of sleep.

Olivia wore a dark suit.

There were no cameras.

No music.

No Nathan.

Only consequences.

Claire spoke first.

“This is not a settlement conference.”

Olivia’s attorney nodded.

“We understand.”

“Mrs. Whitmore is not offering immunity, confidentiality beyond applicable rules, or assistance with your client’s legal exposure.”

“We understand.”

Emma looked at Olivia.

“Then why are you here?”

Olivia’s composure cracked slightly.

“Because Malcolm is going to blame me for everything.”

Emma’s expression did not change.

“Did you do everything?”

“No.”

“Did you do some of it?”

Olivia looked at her attorney.

He gave a small nod.

“Yes.”

Emma waited.

Olivia swallowed.

“I used your trustee login.”

The room became completely still.

Emma felt anger rise slowly through her exhaustion.

“How many times?”

“The first time was in the penthouse.”

“October 14.”

Olivia’s eyes dropped.

“Yes.”

“The morning I miscarried.”

“I did not know that.”

Emma’s face hardened.

“You knew Nathan had a wife problem.”

Olivia flinched.

“I knew he said you wanted him home.”

“And Malcolm told you to keep him in Chicago.”

“Yes.”

“Did you?”

Olivia looked ashamed.

“I made staying easy.”

Emma stared.

“What does that mean?”

“I told him the sellers were relaxed.”

“I told him one drink would not matter.”

“I listened when he complained.”

“I told him he deserved one night without feeling guilty.”

Emma’s eyes filled with fury.

“You knew he was choosing between going home to me and staying with you.”

“Yes.”

“And you wanted him to stay.”

“Yes.”

Olivia’s voice broke.

“I wanted him.”

There was no point pretending otherwise.

Emma leaned back carefully.

May you like

“Did Malcolm tell you to fall in love with him?”

“No.”
