CHAPTER 12: THE NIGHT OF TWO BATTLES

Claire was thirty-one weeks pregnant.
Doctors rushed her into an examination room.
The baby’s heartbeat was unstable again.
Dr. Patel explained that they might need to perform an emergency delivery.
I called Ortiz and told her I could not attend the gala.
“Stay with your wife,” she said. “We’ll handle Reeves.”
An hour later, Claire’s condition worsened.
Doctors prepared for surgery.
I stood beside her while nurses adjusted monitors and placed a cap over her hair.
“I’m scared,” she whispered.
“So am I.”
“Promise me something.”
“Anything.”
“Don’t let what your mother did become the story our child grows up inside.”
I kissed her forehead.
“It won’t.”
She was taken into the operating room.
At the same moment, federal agents entered the Portland Heritage Hotel.
Ortiz sent updates to my phone.
Reeves arrived at 8:10.
Dr. Vale entered through a service entrance wearing a tracking device provided by prosecutors.
Aunt Linda agreed to testify and attended under protection.
Diane remained in federal custody.
The gala began at eight thirty.
At eight forty-two, the hotel’s internet system displayed a countdown on every screen.
TEN MINUTES UNTIL ARCHIVE RELEASE.
Reeves immediately left the ballroom.
Agents followed him to a private office.
There, he ordered two aides to destroy hard drives and remove financial records.
Every word was recorded.
Dr. Vale entered and demanded protection.
Reeves told him he should have “handled Diane years ago.”
That statement connected him directly to the conspiracy.
Agents moved in.
Reeves tried to escape through the hotel kitchen.
He was arrested beside a loading dock as cameras from three news stations recorded the scene.
At the hospital, I heard none of it.
I was listening for a baby’s cry.
Minutes passed.
Then a thin, fragile sound came from behind the operating room door.
Our daughter was alive.
A nurse brought her to me inside a neonatal transport bed.
She was tiny.
Her eyes were closed.
A breathing mask covered part of her face.
But her fingers curled around the tip of mine.
Claire had lost a dangerous amount of blood.
Doctors stabilized her, but she remained unconscious.
I sat between the recovery unit and the neonatal intensive care floor, unable to decide which person I loved needed me more.
Thomas arrived before midnight.
He placed a hand on my shoulder.
“Go see your daughter. I’ll stay with Claire.”
The baby weighed just over three pounds.
We named her Grace.
Not because anything about the past had been graceful.
Because she had survived it.
Shortly after dawn, Claire opened her eyes.
“Is she okay?”
“She’s beautiful.”
Claire began crying.
I showed her a photograph.
“She has your nose,” I said.
“That poor child.”
I laughed for the first time in weeks.
A television in the corner showed footage of Senator Reeves being led from the hotel.
Federal agents arrested twelve others overnight.
Judges resigned.
Police officers were suspended.
Three medical facilities were placed under investigation.
The empire Diane had helped protect was collapsing.
Then Detective Ortiz entered Claire’s room.
She was not smiling.
“What happened?” I asked.
“Diane was found unconscious in her cell.”
Claire’s face tightened.
“Did someone attack her?”
“There were no signs of anyone entering.”
Ortiz held up an evidence bag containing a small capsule.
“She had this hidden inside a dental crown.”
“Is she dead?”
“No. Doctors revived her.”
“Why would she do that?”
Ortiz looked toward the television.
“Because Reeves’s arrest destroyed her leverage.”
But I knew my mother.
Diane did not surrender.
She calculated.
At the hospital where she was being treated, Diane woke up and immediately asked for me.
May you like
When Ortiz refused, Diane gave her one sentence.
“Tell Ethan the baby is not safe while Linda is alive.”
