Chapter One: The Name He Should Never Have Said

Adrian Bennett realized his mistake the second my real name left his mouth.

Claire.

Not Clara Hale.

Not the invisible compliance auditor everyone had ignored for nine days.

Claire Bennett.

His wife.

The executive lounge became so quiet I could hear Victoria Sloan’s bracelet shift against her wrist.

My bracelet.

Victoria turned slowly toward Adrian, confusion flashing across her face before she forced it away.

“Adrian,” she said, her voice sharp. “Tell them who I am.”

Adrian didn’t answer.

That silence did more damage than any confession could have.

I stepped over the broken glass, still holding my phone.

“No,” I said softly. “Let him tell them who I am first.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

Twenty-seven executives stared at him.

Victoria’s confidence cracked.

“Adrian,” she repeated, quieter this time.

He looked at me, and for the first time in twelve years of marriage, I saw the man beneath the empire.

Not the CEO.

Not the public genius.

Just a husband caught standing between his wife and his lie.

“She’s my wife,” he said.

The words fell like a blade.

Victoria went completely still.

One of the finance directors actually whispered, “Oh my God.”

I smiled faintly.

“Thank you. Now let’s discuss why your assistant is wearing stolen jewelry, calling herself your wife, approving ghost vendors, and using company accounts to fund a lifestyle I apparently wasn’t invited to.”

Victoria’s face hardened.

“You have no proof.”

I lifted my phone.

“I have nine days of recordings, invoices, access logs, bank trails, and one very clear video of you striking me.”

Adrian took one step toward me.

“Claire, this should be handled privately.”

I looked at him.

“That ended when your mistress slapped me in front of your employees.”

Victoria flinched.

“Mistress?” she snapped. “He told me your marriage was dead.”

I turned to Adrian.

His face said everything.

The room saw it.

May you like

So did I.

And somehow, that hurt more than the slap.
