PART 3

I helped Anna sit down in the living room.

Her hands were shaking uncontrollably. Red marks from the freezing water were still visible on her skin.

I wrapped a blanket around her shoulders.

She didn’t resist anymore.

She just sat there like her body had finally given up pretending to be strong.

Behind us, my mother entered the room.

Slow. Controlled. Unshaken.

She stopped near the doorway.

“I raised you better than this,” she said.

I didn’t turn around immediately.

I stayed with Anna.

That was my answer.

Then I finally stood up.

“You didn’t raise me,” I said. “You controlled me.”

A pause.

My mother’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“She is destroying you,” she said. “And you are too blind to see it.”

I turned fully now.

For the first time, I wasn’t looking at my mother as a son.

I was looking at her as a man protecting his family.

“If you ever touch her again,” I said calmly, “you will never enter this house again.”

Something changed in her expression.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Disbelief.

Like she had just realized she was losing something she thought she owned.

Anna started crying silently behind me.

May you like

Not from pain anymore.

From relief.
