CHAPTER 3 — “THE SECOND NAME IN THE FILE”

The handcuffs never clicked.

Because the phone in Victor’s pocket rang.

Once.

Then again.

He answered immediately.

No hesitation.

Just a shift in posture.

Like someone else had just taken control of his body.

“Yes,” he said quietly.

The restaurant went still again.

Even the officers paused.

Victor listened.

His expression changed.

Not fear.

Not surprise.

Something colder.

More certain.

He looked at me.

Then at Emily.

Then smiled.

“You should’ve read the whole file,” he said.

My stomach tightened.

Margaret straightened instantly.

“What file?” Emily asked, voice breaking.

Victor turned the phone slightly.

Enough for me to hear the voice on the other end.

Male.

Calm.

Familiar in a way I couldn’t place.

“He found it early,” the voice said. “Proceed anyway.”

One officer stepped forward.

“Sir, end the call.”

Victor lowered the phone.

And then did something unexpected.

He placed it on the table.

Face up.

On speaker.

The voice came through clearly now.

“We warned you,” it said.

Emily grabbed my arm.

“Dad… what is this?”

I didn’t answer.

Because I had just noticed something in the lower corner of the document folder.

A second signature line.

Hidden beneath the visible agreement.

Already filled in.

Before Victor ever signed anything.

A name I had not seen before tonight.

And I knew it immediately.

Because I had seen it years ago.

On a different file.

A case I buried.

A case I promised myself was finished.

The officer looked at me.

“Sir… do you recognize that name?”

Before I could answer—

Victor leaned forward slightly.

And whispered:

“He’s the reason I married your daughter.”

Emily froze.

The room tilted.

And the phone voice spoke again.

Softly.

May you like

Directly into the silence.

“Hello, old friend.”
