Chapter 16 - The Science-Fair Video

Thomas Vale denied knowing Hailey was impersonating me.

He said Ethan described the midnight entry as an authorized physical-security test.

The bank conducted such tests without warning ordinary staff.

Vale claimed he waited beside the console to observe whether guards challenged an employee using after-hours credentials.

"Did you see her face?" the outside investigator asked.

"No."

"Did you ask which employee she was impersonating?"

"Ethan said the badge belonged to a consenting test participant."

"Did you document the test?"

"Ethan was responsible for documentation."

"Did you receive a final report?"

"No."

"Then why did you never follow up?"

Vale said operational demands displaced it.

His explanation made him negligent, not necessarily criminal.

Then investigators showed him an email he sent Ethan the next morning.

Delete the service-door footage before routine archive sync.

Vale said he ordered deletion because covert test footage could expose security methods.

He could explain every act separately.

Together, the acts formed a cover.

The maintenance backup existed only because a vendor had duplicated the feed during an equipment repair.

Vale believed the only copy was gone.

He had allowed the bank to rely on edited footage when suspending me.

He had protected Pacific Crest from embarrassment by making me absorb it.

Federal investigators searched his communications.

No payments from Gertrude, Derek, Victor, or GHB appeared.

However, he had received a warning from Ethan the night I froze the cards.

Potential employee fraud by C. Mercer may surface tomorrow.

Recommend immediate access preservation and controlled narrative.

Vale replied with two words.

Protect institution.

That instruction shaped everything after it.

The bank's first question had not been whether I was innocent.

It had been how my guilt could contain the damage.

Marisol obtained the first crisis-meeting notes through her own counsel.

My name appeared in the subject line before investigators authenticated a single transaction.

One executive proposed suspending me publicly to demonstrate decisive action.

Another warned that a public suspension might create liability if I was impersonated.

Vale wrote, Narrative risk exceeds employment risk.

Four words reduced my work, salary, and reputation to the cheaper side of an equation.

The notes never asked whether Skylar's identity remained exposed.

They discussed customers, regulators, press response, and stockholder confidence.

The child whose number opened the fraudulent accounts appeared only as minor beneficiary.

Institutional language had performed the same trick as Gertrude's business plan.

It removed the person from the harm and left only an item to manage.

Marisol and I agreed that any settlement would require the bank to name affected people before naming reputation risk.

Pacific Crest removed Vale from operational duties.

The board appointed independent counsel.

My leave remained in place because the review was not finished.

Marisol's leave also remained.

She called me from her personal phone.

"They may clear us and still ask us to resign quietly."

"Why?"

"Because our names now remind people of the breach."

"That is not justice."

"Institutions are not built to feel justice."

"They are built to manage risk."

"Then we make the risk of blaming us larger than the risk of admitting the truth."

Marisol laughed once.

"That sounds like you."

"I am trying to remember who that is."

Brandon's phone provided the next piece.

Its photographs included my token on my desk, in my purse, beside my bed, and clipped inside my handbag.

Some images were taken while I slept.

Others were taken at work when Hailey delivered dinner.

One video showed Brandon sitting at our dining table with Ethan on a video call.

Brandon rotated my token so the serial number faced the camera.

Ethan read it aloud.

"Seed copied," he said.

"She will never know the difference."

The date was five days before the first live application entered the system test.

The phone also contained a clip of Hailey practicing my walk.

She wore heel lifts and my coat.

Gertrude corrected the angle of her shoulders.

"Charlotte enters every room like she owns it."

"You keep looking for permission."

Hailey repeated the walk until Gertrude approved.

The clip independently confirmed Hailey's confession and Ethan's role.

It did not prove where I was during the midnight entry.

Brandon and Gertrude could still claim I participated, lent my clothing, and later blamed them.

We needed an alibi stronger than family testimony.

Skylar provided it without realizing she had preserved one.

The night of March 8 was two days before her science fair.

She had recorded a time-lapse video of her volcano drying on the dining table.

The phone camera captured one frame every five seconds from ten that night until two in the morning.

The final project video had been copied to her school account.

We downloaded the original sequence.

At ten seventeen, I entered the kitchen wearing pajamas and carrying tea.

At ten forty, I fell asleep on the sofa visible through the doorway.

At eleven twelve, Brandon removed my purse from beside the sofa.

At eleven twenty, he took my coat from the hallway.

At eleven thirty-one, Hailey entered wearing dark clothing.

Brandon handed her my purse, coat, badge, and token.

At eleven forty-five, Gertrude covered me with a blanket and checked whether I woke.

At twelve sixteen, the woman in my coat entered Pacific Crest headquarters.

At twelve twenty-three, the science-fair camera showed me still asleep on the sofa.

At twelve fifty-four, the woman left headquarters.

At one oh-two, I remained on the sofa.

At one twenty-eight, Hailey returned and gave Brandon my things.

At one thirty-six, Brandon replaced the purse beside me.

At one forty, he poured the remaining tea down the sink.

The time-lapse had no sound.

It did not need sound.

The sequence contained one frame that made Dana pause.

At eleven forty-two, Skylar entered the hallway in pajamas and saw Hailey wearing my coat.

Brandon knelt, pointed toward the bedroom, and handed her something.

The next frame showed Skylar carrying a wrapped cookie.

She remembered the exchange when the child specialist asked gently.

"Dad said Hailey was borrowing Mom's coat for a surprise."

"He told me the cookie was for keeping the surprise secret."

The wrapper was from the seafood restaurant's bakery, which Gertrude had visited that afternoon.

Brandon had prepared a reward for the possibility that his child witnessed the disguise.

He did not stumble into the midnight act after Hailey arrived.

He anticipated the witness, selected the lie, and purchased the silence in advance.

Skylar had not understood the secret then.

Her camera understood time.

Two synchronized cameras placed me and my impersonator in different locations.

The tea mug was visible.

The sedative found in Skylar's thermos made its meaning harder to dismiss.

Federal agents obtained the school server's upload logs and authenticated the video.

The file had been stored weeks before the fraud became public.

It could not have been created in response to the investigation.

By evening, Pacific Crest issued a revised statement.

It said evidence strongly indicated an employee had been impersonated by external and internal actors.

It did not use my name because counsel feared privacy liability.

The same caution that allowed headlines to accuse me now prevented the bank from clearing me directly.

Elena sent the board copies of the original headline, the bank's cautious correction, and the authenticated video timeline.

She placed the word counts beside each other.

The accusation received six hundred words.

The correction received eighty-three.

"Accuracy is not complete when the correction is technically true but designed to disappear," she wrote.

The board's second statement named the impersonation, internal failures, and my cooperation.

It also acknowledged that its initial response contributed to harm.

Several news sites updated their headlines.

Others added a paragraph at the bottom without changing the accusation above it.

We preserved both versions for the civil case.

Truth had begun to return, but it still needed someone to walk it back through every door the lie had entered.

Elena prepared a demand for correction, wage protection, legal fees, and preservation of my position.

"Do you want the job back?" she asked.

"I want the choice."

"Do not let them turn a forced exit into a favor."

That night, a florist delivered white roses to Elena's office.

The card carried no sender name.

It read, FAMILY MEETING, 9 P.M., OLD HOUSE, COME ALONE.

The final line said Gertrude would surrender the original deed, my mother's account records, and a statement clearing me at Pacific Crest.

In exchange, I had to sign the house over to GHB, withdraw my custody allegations, and ask prosecutors for leniency.

Gertrude called ten minutes later from an encrypted number.

Elena activated a consent announcement and recorder.

"This call is being recorded."

"Then Charlotte should listen carefully," Gertrude said.

"I have enough documents to make the bank believe she helped from the beginning."

"The science-fair video proves she was home."

For the first time, Gertrude lost her rhythm.

"Children's videos can be altered."

"The school server preserved it before your fraud surfaced."

"Then the bank will say she trained Hailey."

"Hailey's confession says otherwise."

"Hailey is a criminal trying to save herself."

"So is Brandon."

"My son made mistakes because Charlotte humiliated him."

"Cutting a gas line is not a response to embarrassment."

Gertrude's voice became cold.

"Charlotte can spend years proving every detail, or she can sign one paper and keep her daughter."

"Skylar is not yours to trade."

"Everyone belongs to the person willing to fight hardest."

I took the phone from Elena.

"No, Gertrude."

"That is the lie you taught your son."

"You taught him my money belonged to him, my house belonged to him, and my daughter belonged to him."

"Now he is in jail because he never learned that another human being can say no."

She breathed into the line.

"Come tonight, or the original deed disappears."

"The recorded copy is already evidence."

"Not that deed."

"The deed your mother signed before she died."

I looked at Elena.

"What deed?"

"The one placing your house money and future gifts into trust for you and Skylar."

"The one proving Brandon knew the house could never become marital property."

"The one he stole before your wedding."

If the document existed, it would destroy Brandon's claim that he believed the property was shared.

It would also explain why Gertrude needed my signature rather than relying on marriage.

"Bring it to Elena's office."

"No lawyers."

"Then no meeting."

Gertrude laughed softly.

"You think you are negotiating because police stand near you."

"Look outside."

The call ended.

We went to the window.

Across the street, a digital billboard changed from an advertisement to Hailey's edited video.

My face appeared thirty feet high above the traffic.

The caption said CHILD THIEF, BANK THIEF, FAMILY DESTROYER.

The billboard belonged to a company purchased through GHB that morning.

Gertrude had spent more stolen money to threaten me publicly.

Then every screen in Elena's office went black.

A message appeared in white letters.

The message remained for twelve seconds before the vendor killed the session.

Twelve seconds was enough for every employee to photograph it.

Within minutes, the threat circulated through private group chats and social media.

Gertrude understood that an internal screen carried more authority than one of Hailey's posts.

She had placed her accusation inside the furniture of a law office.

People assumed anything appearing there had defeated security and therefore must possess power.

The technical breach was small.

The psychological breach was the point.

SIGN TONIGHT, OR TOMORROW EVERY CLIENT AT PACIFIC CREST GETS YOUR FILE.

Gertrude was no longer threatening only my reputation.

She was threatening a mass release of confidential bank data through credentials stolen in my name.

If the files were released, thousands of people could be harmed.

And the breach would appear to come from me.
