Chapter 14 - THE ASSISTANT WHO KEPT A COPY

Graham Vale stopped answering calls the next day.
His firm issued a statement saying he was on medical leave.
Nobody believed it.
His office access badge had been used at 5:12 a.m.
His computer had been remotely wiped at 5:46.
By 6:03, the firm's document server began deleting folders labeled KESTREL, REPRO, and MERCER TRUST.
The deletion stopped at 6:11 because one junior systems engineer disconnected the server after noticing the unusual activity.
At 7:20, Graham's executive assistant called Maya.
Her name was Tessa Monroe.
She had worked for him for nine years.
Her first words were simple.
"I think my boss is destroying evidence."
Maya put the call on speaker in her office.
"What makes you think that?"
"Because he told me to shred thirteen paper files yesterday."
"Did you?"
"No."
"Where are they?"
"In my car."
Maya looked at me.
"Do not drive anywhere until we arrange a safe handoff."
Tessa started crying.
"I didn't know what this was."
"He told me they were old family-planning documents."
"Then I saw a copy of a woman's passport with the name Clara Hale-Mercer."
I closed my eyes.
"What else?"
"A gestational contract."
"Emails from Evelyn Mercer."
"A storage receipt from Delaware."
"And a flash drive."
Maya's voice sharpened.
"Do not plug in the drive."
"I haven't."
"Put everything in a sealed bag if you can."
"Law enforcement will collect it."
By noon, the prosecutor had the files.
By three, forensic technicians created an image of the flash drive.
It was encrypted.
Tessa supplied the password because Graham reused the same password structure for archived client files.
The drive opened.
Inside were years of emails, scanned signatures, private agreements, payment instructions, and voice memos.
The first folder was labeled FAMILY CONTINUITY.
I hated the phrase instantly.
Maya and I reviewed a court-authorized copy with investigators.
One email from Evelyn to Graham was dated two months before CM-JM-03 was transferred.
JULIAN IS TOO WEAK TO END THE MARRIAGE CLEANLY.
SIENNA IS IMPATIENT.
KEENE BELIEVES CLARA'S REMAINING EMBRYOS ARE EXCELLENT.
WE NEED A SOLUTION THAT PRESERVES THE LINE AND REMOVES CLARA'S LEVERAGE.
I read the last sentence twice.
My embryos were leverage to her.
Not potential children.
Not part of my body and future.
Leverage.
Graham replied.
WE CANNOT MOVE JOINT REPRODUCTIVE MATERIAL WITHOUT HER CONSENT.
Evelyn answered twelve minutes later.
THEN MAKE SURE THE FILE SAYS WE HAVE IT.
The room went cold.
Maya looked at the investigator.
"That is intent."
He nodded.
"It is strong evidence of conspiracy to falsify consent."
Another email showed Dr. Keene asking for a clean copy of my signature.
Graham forwarded a scan of my passport.
The source metadata traced back to a foundation travel folder Sienna could access.
Another thread concerned Julian.
Graham wrote that Julian was "aware that remaining embryos may be reassigned within the family plan" but should not receive operational details.
Evelyn responded.
HE DOES NOT WANT TO KNOW ENOUGH TO STOP IT.
My jaw tightened.
That sentence sounded like Julian.
He had spent years turning deliberate ignorance into innocence.
The drive also contained the contract with Natalie Crane.
Beside her agreement was a note.
BACKUP RECIPIENT ONLY IF SB BECOMES UNRELIABLE.
A third folder contained shipping records for CM-JM-04.
We finally found the actual path.
It left our original clinic for Northshore Storage.
Seventeen months later, Evelyn ordered it released.
But it never entered the canister that went to Connecticut.
The night before shipping, Graham instructed Northshore to perform an "internal relabeling for privacy."
Northshore refused.
Then someone using Graham's credentials uploaded a revised manifest.
A private courier named Arden BioTransit collected a separate canister six hours before the decoy shipment left.
Destination field: PRIVATE CLIENT HAND CARRY.
"Who was the courier?" I asked.
The investigator searched.
"Contract employee named Mason Redd."
"Where is he?"
"We're working on it."
Another file gave us an even better lead.
A scanned expense receipt for a private aircraft hangar in White Plains.
Date: four days ago.
Client initials: E.M.
Julian looked at the receipt when Maya showed him later.
"My mother flew somewhere?"
"Do you know where?"
"She has a NetJets account."
"Records?"
"My company can access corporate travel."
Daniel Frost immediately objected to Julian casually providing company records without process.
Julian turned on him.
"Send them the records."
Daniel stared at his client.
"You understand that doing so may expose you to additional liability?"
"I understand my mother is moving Clara's embryo around like a suitcase."
For the first time, he said my embryo instead of family material.
The change did not earn him forgiveness.
It did tell me fear was finally forcing him to see the thing itself.
Corporate flight logs showed Evelyn had flown from White Plains to Boston four days earlier.
From Boston, no Mercer aircraft record existed.
But the flash drive contained a hotel confirmation in Providence, Rhode Island.
The investigators sent local officers to the hotel.
Evelyn was gone.
Her room had been cleaned.
The trash had been collected.
A hallway camera showed her leaving with Graham Vale at 6:20 that morning.
Graham was not sick.
He was running.
Tessa Monroe identified a second man in the footage.
Mason Redd.
The courier.
He carried a small hard-sided case.
The same size as the case in the anonymous photograph.
I stared at the video still.
"Where would they take it?"
Dr. Vance studied the case.
"A properly charged cryogenic shipper can maintain temperature for days."
"But if they intend implantation, they need a clinic."
"If they intend destruction, they need almost nothing."
My stomach dropped.
"Why destroy it?"
Maya answered.
"Because CM-JM-04 is physical evidence that your embryos survived."
"Because its chain of custody links the same people to the same scheme."
"And because if criminal charges are coming, Evelyn may prefer one less living piece of evidence."
I felt a surge of anger so intense it steadied me.
"Find her."
The investigator nodded.
"We will."
That evening, Tessa called Maya again.
She had remembered something.
Graham maintained a separate paper calendar for meetings too sensitive to enter digitally.
She had photographed the current month before surrendering the files.
One entry appeared for the next morning.
9:30 - BLACKSTONE / FINAL DISPOSITION / E.M.
Maya searched the name.
There were six companies called Blackstone in the region.
Three law firms.
Two investment companies.
One private reproductive laboratory in western Massachusetts.
Dr. Vance recognized it immediately.
"Blackstone Cryobiology."
"They do long-term reproductive tissue storage and research disposition."
"Research disposition?"
"Including consented destruction."
My blood turned cold.
Maya was already calling the prosecutor.
"How far is it?"
"About two and a half hours."
"Then we get an order tonight."
At 11:54 p.m., Judge Keller signed an emergency injunction prohibiting Blackstone from accepting, thawing, transferring, destroying, or altering any specimen linked to CM-JM-04.
At 12:18 a.m., a federal magistrate signed a related seizure warrant based on the interstate transport evidence.
At 12:41, investigators reached Blackstone by phone.
The overnight supervisor checked incoming appointments.
There was no CM-JM-04 on the schedule.
There was, however, a private client appointment at 9:30 under a different identifier.
The genetic contributor name listed on the intake form was not Mercer.
It was Hale.
My maiden name.
