Chapter 14 - SUSAN'S CONFESSION

Susan's decision to confess did not arrive as courage.
It arrived as exhaustion after the bank fire failed.
Her attorney said she spent the night asking whether Dwight had been arrested again and whether Ryan was alive.
She did not ask about Jared.
For the first time in decades, his condition had stopped organizing her attention.
The interview room contained no clock.
Susan had measured her life by Jared's arrivals, moods, meals, and demands.
Without a clock, she kept looking toward the door as though he might still enter and tell her which version to use.
Ortiz placed the original recording transcript in front of her.
Susan's younger voice appeared on the page warning Catherine to leave.
The transcript proved she once recognized danger clearly.
Years with Jared had not made her ignorant.
They had made knowledge negotiable.
When I entered, Susan looked at my repaired tooth before meeting my eyes.
She had asked the doctor whether the damage would be permanent.
The question did not comfort me.
Concern after participation was another complicated truth I did not owe anyone help carrying.
I sat down and waited for her to begin without being invited.
The bank locked down its vault before the forged order succeeded.
Security cameras showed Malcolm Price entering through the employee entrance with Rebecca Vale.
Price wore a courier badge.
Rebecca wore a dark wig and carried a document case.
A bank employee recognized that the judge's seal looked distorted and called the court.
By the time officers reached the branch, Price and Rebecca had escaped through the parking garage.
They left the forged order behind.
The paper carried Gemma's fingerprints.
The ink matched a printer in the family apartment.
The electronic signature image came from a motion Christopher filed two days earlier.
Ryan's tablet contained a tutorial showing Gemma how to remove backgrounds from scanned signatures.
The conspiracy kept leaving instructions for its own prosecution.
Susan heard about the attempted vault theft from her attorney.
She requested another interview.
This time, she asked that I be present.
Christopher warned me that Susan might be trying to shape her testimony around my reactions.
I understood.
I also knew she possessed thirty years of answers no database could provide.
We met in a federal interview room.
Susan entered wearing a gray detention uniform.
The bruise beneath her eye had darkened.
She sat with both hands visible and looked directly at me.
"I lied in the church," she said.
"That does not narrow it down."
"I knew about Thomas Calderon's death before it happened."
The room became still.
Susan described being twenty-one, pregnant with Dwight, and terrified of Jared.
At that time, Jared believed the baby was his.
It was not.
Dwight's biological father was Leonard Pike.
The affair lasted only a few months.
When Jared discovered it, he threatened to kill Leonard and take the baby.
Susan stayed with Jared because he promised to raise Dwight as his own.
He kept that promise publicly.
Privately, he reminded Dwight that love had to be earned through usefulness.
"Did Dwight know?" I asked.
"Not until he was seventeen."
"Jared told him during an argument."
"After that, Dwight tried harder to become Jared than Jared's own blood could ever be."
Ryan was Jared's biological son.
Gemma was too.
Dwight was the outsider inside the family, the son who built his identity around winning approval from the man who despised him.
It explained his obedience.
It did not excuse it.
Susan continued.
She overheard Jared arranging Thomas's death with Leonard and the mechanic.
Leonard participated because Jared threatened to expose the affair and take Dwight.
Susan warned Catherine and Meredith.
That was why her voice appeared on the original tape.
She begged them to leave.
Then she returned home to Jared and pretended she knew nothing.
"Why not go to police?" Ortiz asked.
Susan laughed without humor.
"The evidence clerk attended our wedding."
"The hospital administrator was Jared's cousin."
"Malcolm Price's father handled the company books."
"Every door opened into another room he controlled."
Years later, when Catherine tried to expose the murder again, Jared arranged her false death and confinement.
Susan signed documents because he threatened Dwight.
She delivered payments because he threatened Ryan and Gemma.
She watched Jared hurt strangers and called her silence protection.
Then the children became adults and joined him.
The excuse no longer fit.
"You also helped them target me," I said.
Susan nodded.
"Yes."
"No threat forced you to hand me that duty list with a smile."
Her eyes filled.
"No."
"No threat forced you to tell me Gemma needed special detergent."
"No."
"No threat forced you to call the bank and claim you were my guardian."
"No."
She did not ask me to understand.
That was the first honest gift she gave me.
Susan explained the laundering system.
JRS Household Services collected cash from several laundromats, vending routes, and illegal lending operations.
The family reported part of it as cleaning income.
The rest moved through false maintenance contracts attached to Harbor House properties.
Jared had been stealing from Meredith long after he left the company.
Malcolm Price created vendors.
Leonard moved cash.
Susan signed checks.
Gemma forged approvals.
Ryan altered digital records.
Dwight searched databases and targeted me.
Ashley watched me.
Rebecca controlled Catherine.
Everyone had become a department inside Jared's private company.
"What is in envelope 219?" Ortiz asked.
Susan looked at the mirror on the wall.
She knew agents watched from the other side.
"The original invoice from the mechanic."
"A letter from Leonard admitting delivery of Thomas's schedule."
"And Meredith's original trust amendment."
That document could prove the marriage clause was forged.
"Why place it under Dwight's name?"
"Jared wanted insurance against Leonard."
"Leonard wanted insurance against Jared."
"They each believed the other did not know."
"I opened the account because Dwight was a child and the bank required a parent."
"I kept the key until Jared found it."
"Then Meredith somehow made a duplicate and hid it in the music box."
Susan believed Catherine told Meredith about the envelope before her confinement.
The etched words BELOW SEVEN referred to the basement tape.
The key in the music box referred to envelope 219.
The clues were separated so no single discovery exposed everything.
"Where is Catherine now?" I asked.
Susan hesitated.
"I do not know the exact address."
"But you know who does."
"Ryan."
Ryan had not merely stored the family's videos.
He communicated with Catherine after Ashley helped her escape.
He sent her money through cryptocurrency accounts and warned her when Jared's men approached.
The payments marked R.R. in the ledger were not all compensation from Jared.
Some were withdrawals Ryan redirected to Catherine.
He played both sides.
"Why would Ryan help her?"
"Because Catherine spoke to him like he mattered."
Susan's voice broke.
"She did what I stopped doing years ago."
After the laundry meeting, Ryan fled because he believed Jared would kill him for surrendering the tablet.
Ortiz had placed him in a protected location.
He claimed he no longer knew how to contact Catherine.
Susan said he was lying.
"He uses video file names as messages," she explained.
"The dates are coordinates."
"The frame numbers are phone digits."
"He learned it from Meredith's investigator."
The technical team returned to Ryan's tablet.
Several harmless family videos had unusual names.
When decoded, they produced an internet telephone number and a phrase.
HARBOR LIGHT STILL ON.
Ortiz called from a secure line.
No one answered.
A minute later, a text arrived.
PROVE ELIZABETH IS SAFE.
I recorded a message using the nickname only my mother knew.
"Little Harbor is tired of being moved without being asked."
"I am safe for this minute."
"I need to know whether you are."
The reply came ten minutes later.
A photograph showed a woman holding three fingers beside that day's newspaper.
It was the real Catherine.
The scar curved downward.
She stood in front of a white wall with a round window.
Text beneath the image provided instructions for a meeting the next day.
No police vehicles.
No phones.
No Helen.
No Ashley.
Only Elizabeth and one lawyer.
The location would be sent thirty minutes before the meeting.
Christopher agreed to come.
Ortiz agreed publicly and planned surveillance privately.
Before the interview ended, Susan asked for one final thing.
"Do not let Dwight see what is inside envelope 219 before you do."
"Why?"
"Because Leonard wrote more than a confession."
"He wrote who ordered Meredith's death."
"Jared?"
Susan shook her head.
May you like
"Dwight."
