Chapter 4: The Last Meeting

Three months later...
Matthew Hayes stood alone inside a federal courtroom.
Gone was the tailored Italian suit.
Gone was the luxury watch.
Gone were the television interviews.
The reporters waiting outside no longer wanted his business opinions.
They wanted photographs of his downfall.
Across the courtroom sat Clare.
The bruises had healed.
The scars had faded.
But something inside her had changed forever.
She no longer looked toward Matthew.
She looked forward.
The judge reviewed the evidence.
Medical records.
Security footage.
Witness testimony.
Financial misconduct uncovered during the investigation.
When the sentence was announced, Matthew closed his eyes.
He had lost everything.
His marriage.
His company.
His reputation.
His freedom.
As deputies led him away, he stopped.
For the first time in years, he looked at Clare without arrogance.
"I'm sorry."
She met his eyes calmly.
"I forgave you."
Hope flickered across his face.
Then she finished.
"But forgiveness doesn't erase consequences."
She stood.
Arthur Sterling waited by the courtroom doors.
He offered his daughter his arm.
This time...
She accepted it.
Outside, cameras flashed beneath the morning sun.
Reporters shouted questions.
Arthur ignored every one of them.
He looked only at Clare.
"Where to now?"
She smiled for the first time in years.
"Home."
Together, father and daughter walked down the courthouse steps.
