CHAPTER 6— THE PRIVATE CLINIC

Emergency lights flickered on.

Adrian was gone.

So was the phone.

But before the connection ended, Detective Ellis traced the video signal to an abandoned wing of the Hale Institute outside the city.

The same clinic where Lydia had been imprisoned.

The same clinic where my mother had once been treated.

Police surrounded the property.

Margaret threatened to harm Noah if she saw a single officer.

Adrian contacted me from an unknown number.

“Come alone.”

Claire grabbed my arm.

“You cannot go in there.”

“My son is inside.”

“That is what they want.”

“I know.”

I went anyway.

Not alone.

A tracker was hidden beneath the bandage on my wrist.

Lydia entered through an old service tunnel she remembered from her escape.

Sophia remained with Detective Ellis, coordinating the search through the clinic’s original architectural plans.

I walked through the front entrance.

The halls smelled of bleach, dust, and something older.

Fear.

Adrian waited inside the reception area.

His suit was wrinkled.

Blood marked the corner of his mouth.

“What happened to you?” I asked.

“My mother.”

He laughed bitterly.

“She always said I was too sentimental.”

“You helped her take Noah.”

“I helped her leave the hospital.”

My stomach twisted.

“I thought she would take him to the airport. Then she changed the plan.”

“Why should I believe you?”

“Because she plans to kill me too.”

He held out a keycard.

“She has Noah in the old surgical wing.”

I took it.

Adrian caught my hand.

“We can still leave together.”

I stared at him.

“You think there is still a together?”

“I loved you.”

“No. You studied me.”

His grip tightened.

“I gave you everything.”

“You gave me a prison with chandeliers.”

Something ugly entered his eyes.

The frightened man disappeared.

There he was again.

The real Adrian.

“You should have signed.”

Detective Ellis heard every word through the tracker.

Adrian did not know it contained a microphone.

“You knew who I was before we met,” I said.

“Yes.”

“You arranged every encounter.”

“Yes.”

“You married me for my trust.”

“At first.”

“And afterward?”

He smiled.

“Afterward, I enjoyed watching Victor Whitmore’s daughter ask permission to buy groceries.”

The cruelty in his voice was effortless.

He was proud of it.

“You ordered Dr. Hale to drug me.”

“Yes.”

“You planned to have me committed.”

“Yes.”

“And you were willing to take Noah from me.”

“He is my son.”

“No. He was your final asset.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

He realized I was not asking questions for myself.

He reached beneath my bandage and found the tracker.

Before he could destroy it, alarms sounded through the clinic.

Lydia had activated the fire system.

Doors unlocked throughout the building.

I ran.

Adrian chased me into the surgical wing.

Smoke moved beneath the ceiling.

At the end of the hallway, Margaret stood beside an operating table.

Noah lay inside a portable incubator.

His tiny fists moved beneath the blanket.

I nearly collapsed with relief.

“Give him to me.”

Margaret held a syringe near his IV line.

“One more step.”

I stopped.

Adrian entered behind me.

“Mother, put it down.”

She laughed.

“You always were disappointing.”

“You said we would leave together.”

“I said what you needed to hear.”

Margaret looked at me.

“Your father should have let your mother remain here.”

“What did you do to her?”

“I did nothing. Victor removed her before treatment was complete.”

“My mother died in a car accident.”

Margaret smiled.

“No, Elena.”

The air left my lungs.

“Your mother is alive.”

For one second, even Adrian looked surprised.

Margaret continued.

“She discovered what we were doing at the clinic. Victor hid her to protect his company from scandal.”

I wanted to believe it was another lie.

Then a woman’s voice came from the doorway.

“That is not why he hid me.”

An older woman stood beside Lydia.

Her silver-streaked hair framed a face I knew from a photograph.

My mother.

Isabelle Whitmore.

Alive.

Margaret turned toward her.

That was the moment Lydia moved.

She struck Margaret’s wrist.

The syringe flew across the floor.

I ran to Noah.

Adrian grabbed Margaret and dragged her toward the rear exit.

“Come on!”

Margaret shoved him away.

“You ruined everything.”

Adrian reached for her again.

She pulled a pistol from her coat.

The shot echoed through the hall.

Adrian fell.

Detective Ellis and the officers stormed through the doors.

Margaret raised the weapon again.

Isabelle stepped between her and me.

“Enough.”

Margaret hesitated.

That single second ended it.

Ellis forced her to the floor.

Officers carried Noah and me outside.

Adrian survived.

The bullet had struck his shoulder.

Margaret was arrested.

My mother sat beside me in the ambulance, holding my hand as if she had never let it go.

I thought the nightmare was over.

Then Claire received a call from federal investigators.

Her face went pale.

“What now?” I asked.

Margaret had transferred the stolen eighty million dollars into an international account.

May you like

The account had been opened in my name.

And every document carried my real signature.
