CHAPTER 2 — THE BABY THEY TRIED TO SILENCE

The ambulance reached Manhattan Memorial Hospital in less than eight minutes.

To Clara, it felt like a lifetime.

Every bump in the road sent another wave of pain through her swollen body.

Ethan never released her hand.

He sat beside the stretcher, his expensive black suit stained with her blood, whispering the same words over and over.

"Stay with me."

"I'm here."

"Our little one is fighting."

Doctors and nurses rushed her through the emergency entrance.

"Seven months pregnant."

"Possible abdominal trauma."

"Prepare the operating room."

The doors slammed shut between them.

For the first time in years, Ethan Lawson—the billionaire whose signature could move international markets—found himself completely powerless.

He stood alone in the empty hallway.

Unable to buy another second.

Unable to negotiate with fate.

Unable to protect the woman he loved.

An hour later...

The attending physician finally stepped outside.

"There was internal bleeding."

Ethan's heart stopped.

"But..."

The doctor smiled.

"We controlled it in time."

"Your wife and your son are alive."

The strongest man in the building nearly collapsed.

He covered his face with both hands before quietly thanking every doctor in sight.

Inside the recovery room, Clara slowly opened her eyes.

The first thing she saw was Ethan asleep beside her bed.

Still wearing the same bloodstained suit.

Still holding her hand.

His head rested awkwardly against the mattress.

He had never left.

Tears blurred her vision.

"You stayed..."

Ethan looked up immediately.

"As long as I breathe."

He kissed her forehead gently.

"I'm never letting anyone hurt you again."

She smiled weakly.

Neither of them noticed someone standing outside the partially opened door.

Victor Hale.

Ethan's grandfather.

Founder of the Lawson Global Empire.

The man who had built a fortune worth billions.

He watched silently before entering.

For several long seconds, he simply stared at Clara.

Then...

He bowed.

A ninety-year-old billionaire bowed his head to his granddaughter-in-law.

"I'm sorry."

His voice trembled.

"I believed lies."

"I almost allowed my own family to destroy the woman carrying our future."

Clara tried to sit up.

Victor gently stopped her.

"No."

"You've already carried enough."

Then he turned toward Ethan.

"Tomorrow morning."

"Bring every board member."

"Every attorney."

"Every shareholder representative."

"I'm ending this."

Ethan understood immediately.

The emergency board meeting wasn't about business.

It was about justice.

Across town...

Inside a holding cell.

Vanessa sat alone.

Mascara streaked down her face.

She still believed everything could be fixed.

"My father knows judges."

"My family owns politicians."

"This is nothing."

Then her lawyer quietly placed a thick folder onto the table.

"The recordings are everywhere."

"The media already has them."

"The police have forensic reports."

"The witnesses are cooperating."

He paused.

"And..."

"The Lawsons have officially filed attempted murder charges."

For the first time...

Vanessa felt genuine fear.

The empire she planned to marry into...

Had just declared war against her.
