PART 3 — The Woman Behind the Door

The soft click echoed through the room.
Damian turned instantly.
His mother stood beside the closed door.
Grace Blackwood.
Perfect posture.
Perfect pearls.
Perfect smile.
As though she had walked into afternoon tea instead of a nightmare.
"I wondered how long it would take."
Her voice remained calm.
Almost amused.
Damian stared at her.
"Tell me she's lying."
Grace sighed.
"Oh, Damian..."
"I protected this family."
She slowly walked toward the bed.
"The doctors warned us."
"They said the baby might inherit Evelyn's condition."
Evelyn looked up.
"What condition?"
Grace smiled.
"The one we invented."
Silence.
Then she laughed softly.
"You were never sick."
"You were inconvenient."
Damian felt the room spin.
Grace continued without remorse.
"If people believed you were mentally unstable..."
"...then nobody would question bruises."
"Nobody would question isolation."
"And eventually..."
"...nobody would question custody."
Damian's breathing became ragged.
"Custody?"
Grace finally looked directly at Evelyn's pregnant belly.
"The Blackwood heir belongs to us."
"Not to you."
She had never wanted Evelyn.
She had only wanted the baby.
A sudden buzzing sound shattered the silence.
Damian looked down.
His phone.
Twenty-seven unread messages.
All from the Blackwood legal office.
The first message read:
Emergency Board Meeting.
Your mother has filed documents declaring Evelyn mentally incompetent.

The filing time...
was exactly one hour earlier.
