CHAPTER 10 — MARCUS’S CONFESSION

Marcus demanded to see Khloe.
Gabriel refused.
Marcus threatened legal action.
Gabriel laughed.
Eventually, Khloe allowed him inside under the watch of two security officers.
Marcus stopped near the bed.
For the first time since the attack, he looked exhausted.
Khloe did not offer him a chair.
“Did you send Isabella into my suite?”
“No.”
“Did you know she was going?”
“Yes.”
“Did you think she would hurt me?”
Marcus looked down.
“I thought she would confront you.”
“You heard her threaten me.”
“I froze.”
“You waited forty-seven seconds.”
“I was trying to understand what I was hearing.”
Khloe’s eyes filled with cold disbelief.
“You were deciding which woman would be more useful.”
“That isn’t fair.”
“Fair?”
Her voice rose, and the fetal monitor quickened.
Dr. Reed stepped closer, but Khloe lifted a hand.
“Did you sleep with her?”
Marcus said nothing.
Khloe nodded slowly.
“How long?”
“Six months.”
The truth landed more quietly than the attack.
Perhaps because Khloe had already suspected it.
“Did she believe you would leave me?”
“I told her I needed time.”
“Did you tell her my baby wasn’t yours?”
Marcus looked toward the guards.
Khloe understood.
“You did.”
“I was angry.”
“You gave her a reason to hate my child.”
“I never told her to hurt you.”
“But you gave her the weapon.”
Marcus moved closer.
“I made unforgivable mistakes. But someone manipulated both of us.”
Khloe laughed bitterly.
“You want to become a victim now?”
He removed a small key from his pocket and placed it on the table.
“My father gave this to me before he died.”
“What does it open?”
“A private vault beneath Thorne Tower.”
“Why give it to me?”
“Because your father’s name is written on the door.”
Khloe stared at the key.
Marcus lowered his voice.
“My father told me that if anything happened to you during your pregnancy, I was to open that vault.”
“And you waited until now?”
“I was afraid of what was inside.”
May you like
Khloe looked directly at him.
“You should be.”
