Chapter 2 — The House of Lies

The first siren reached the estate less than four minutes later.
Then another.
And another.
Blue and red lights painted the marble columns outside the mansion while guests rushed toward the windows, whispering in confusion.
The brunette—Vanessa Holloway—stopped crying.
Something wasn't right.
She had expected an ambulance.
Not six police vehicles.
The front doors burst open.
Instead of paramedics leading the way, Detective Daniel Morgan entered flanked by officers wearing tactical vests marked FINANCIAL CRIMES UNIT.
Behind them came investigators carrying evidence cases.
Vanessa blinked.
"What... what is this?"
Morgan never looked at her.
His eyes found the woman still lying at the bottom of the staircase.
"Mrs. Eleanor Ashford."
His voice softened.
"We're here."
Several officers immediately surrounded Eleanor, carefully examining her condition before helping stabilize her without moving her spine.
Only then did Morgan stand.
His expression became ice.
"No one leaves this property."
The room erupted.
"What?"
"You can't do that!"
"My lawyer—"
Morgan held up a folded warrant.
"Search warrants signed by the Superior Court."
Silence.
He slowly looked toward Vanessa.
"Specifically concerning Ms. Vanessa Holloway."
Color drained from her face.
"I—I don't understand."
"Oh," Morgan replied calmly.
"I think you understand perfectly."
Three months earlier...
Eleanor Ashford had walked into Morgan's office carrying nothing except a folder.
Inside were photographs.
Wire transfers.
Insurance documents.
Medical reports.
Private investigator notes.
And one handwritten journal.
"My husband thinks I'm paranoid."
She spoke quietly.
"But every woman who stood between Vanessa and money..."
Morgan opened the file.
"...ended up dead."
There had been four.
One drowned during a yacht accident.
One supposedly overdosed.
Another died after falling from a balcony.
The last was killed in what police ruled a robbery.
Different cities.
Different circumstances.
No connections.
Except one.
Vanessa knew every single victim.
Unfortunately...
Knowing someone wasn't proof.
Morgan needed evidence.
Real evidence.
Then Eleanor slid one final photograph across the table.
Vanessa smiling beside a staircase.
Every victim had suffered a "fall" weeks before dying.
The pattern suddenly became impossible to ignore.
"You think she'll push you?"
Eleanor nodded.
"Not today."
"But eventually."
"And when she does..."
She rested a protective hand over her unborn child.
"...I'll be ready."
Present day.
Detective Morgan removed a tiny transparent evidence bag.
Inside sat a crushed marble-colored bead.
He held it toward the gathered guests.
"Recognize this?"
Nobody answered.
Morgan crouched beside the staircase.
Hidden beneath the polished railing was an almost invisible miniature camera.
The housekeeper gasped.
"I've cleaned this staircase for years..."
"I never saw that."
"You weren't supposed to."
Morgan nodded toward another investigator.
Within minutes...
Five additional hidden cameras were recovered.
Every angle.
Every movement.
Every second.
Vanessa suddenly couldn't breathe.
Because she remembered.
Months ago...
She herself had insisted no household staff clean the decorative carvings around the staircase.
She had unknowingly protected the cameras installed to catch her.
Detective Morgan looked directly at her.
"The entire incident..."
He paused.
"...was recorded in 8K resolution."
The mansion fell silent.
Vanessa's knees nearly buckled.
For the first time that afternoon...
May you like
Her performance ended.
And genuine fear finally appeared.
