CHAPTER 2 — “THE BROKEN MEMORY FILE”

Boston South Station fell silent around them, as if the world itself had paused to listen.

Evelyn’s breath came uneven.

Her hands were shaking so badly she had to grip the strap of Noah’s backpack just to stay standing.

The homeless boy—her other son—lowered the locket slowly, as if afraid the truth itself might shatter.

A security guard nearby started to approach.

Then stopped.

Something about the scene made him hesitate.

Evelyn finally forced her voice out.

“Where… did you get that?”

The boy swallowed.

His lips cracked when he spoke.

“From the woman who left me.”

Noah flinched.

“Left you…?”

The boy nodded once.

“I was told she died.”

A train roared somewhere above them, shaking dust from the iron beams.

Evelyn took another step forward.

“No… no, that’s not possible.”

But her voice didn’t sound like denial anymore.

It sounded like recognition trying to escape.

A memory broke through—

hospital lights…

two newborn cries…

a doctor shouting…

and then—

silence.

Evelyn suddenly grabbed her head.

“Noah… we were told only one survived…”

Her knees weakened.

She almost fell.

The homeless boy watched her carefully.

Not accusing.

Not angry.

May you like

Just waiting.

As if he had been waiting for twelve years for her to finish remembering.
