CHAPTER 1 — THE THING YOU WERE NEVER MEANT TO SEE

The room did not feel like a battlefield.

It felt like a confession someone had tried to bury under silk and diamonds.

Harper still knelt on the marble floor, trembling as if the ground itself might punish her for existing. The torn wedding dress clung to her like a failed disguise. Pearls rolled slowly away from her knees, scattering toward Enzo’s polished shoes.

But Enzo didn’t move.

Not at first.

His eyes stayed locked on her back.

On what had been hidden.

On what had been done.

The silence stretched until it became unbearable.

Harper finally spoke, voice breaking but controlled.

“Don’t look at me like that…”

Enzo’s jaw tightened.

“Like what?”

“Like I’m… real.”

That hit harder than it should have.

He crouched slowly, not touching her—just lowering himself into her level, like approaching something wounded that might still bite.

“Who did this?” he asked again.

Harper shook her head immediately.

“No.”

“That’s not an answer.”

Her breath stuttered.

“If I say it,” she whispered, “I don’t survive it.”

Something cold moved through Enzo’s chest.

Not anger.

Recognition.

Because he understood that kind of fear.

May you like

The kind that didn’t come from threats.

It came from experience.
