CHAPTER 3 — “THE TRUTH ON THE STAIRS” (FINAL CHAPTER)

Detective Ruiz (looking at pregnant woman): “Tell me what happened in your words.”
Pregnant Woman: “She pushed me. No hesitation. Direct impact. I fell here.”
Detective Ruiz: “Any reason?”
Blonde Woman (quickly): “Because she was accusing me of things I didn’t do!”
Pregnant Woman (turning slightly): “I didn’t accuse you. I observed you.”
Blonde Woman: “That’s a lie!”
Caretaker (suddenly speaking up): “She didn’t scream until after the fall.”
(Silence in the hallway)
Blonde Woman (freezing): “What?”
Caretaker (conflicted): “I thought she was injured first… but now I remember… she was standing.”
Blonde Woman (voice breaking but losing control): “You’re confused! She manipulated you!”
Pregnant Woman (soft, final tone): “No. You did that yourself.”
Detective Ruiz: “Ma’am, I need you to step away from the staircase.”
Blonde Woman: “You’re arresting me based on her?”
Detective Ruiz: “No.”
(Beat)
Detective Ruiz: “I’m arresting you based on inconsistency, witness contradiction, and your own behavior since my arrival.”
Blonde Woman (voice cracking completely): “You don’t understand… she’s lying…”
Pregnant Woman (quiet, almost whisper): “I didn’t need to raise my voice once.”
Blonde Woman (final breakdown): “NO—THIS ISN’T OVER!”
Detective Ruiz: “It is for you.”

ENDING SCENE
Caretaker (softly): “Should I get you medical help?”
Pregnant Woman: “Already called.”
Caretaker: “You knew this would happen, didn’t you?”
Pregnant Woman (looking at staircase, calm): “No.”
(pause)
Pregnant Woman: “But I knew she would choose the same behavior again.”
Detective Ruiz (from doorway): “Who are you really?”

Pregnant Woman (slowly standing for the first time): “Someone who stopped being surprised a long time ago.”
