CHAPTER 3 — THE LIGHT THAT SHOULDN’T HAVE BEEN THERE

By midnight, the Hart penthouse no longer looked like a home.

It looked like an investigation.

Every hallway light was too bright. Every shadow felt interrogated.

Eliza sat in a side room with security nearby—not restrained, but not free either. Vanessa had already left the room earlier, claiming “this madness was beneath her,” but no one believed she had left out of offense alone.

Adrian stood in front of the surveillance monitors.

Hundreds of hours of footage.

One child.

One house.

Too many doors.

“Show me her nights,” he ordered.

The technician hesitated. “Sir… that’s a lot of data.”

“I didn’t ask about the size of it,” Adrian said. “I asked for it.”

The screens shifted.

One corridor.

Then another.

Then Isla’s bedroom.

At first: nothing unusual.

A child sleeping.

A hallway empty.

A staff rotation at 2:13 a.m.

Then—

Eliza.

Entering.

Not rushing.

Not sneaking.

But not entirely casual either.

She carried a small lamp.

Placed it near the door.

Adjusted it so the light fell across the floor where Isla could see it from the bed.

Then she sat.

Not on the bed.

On the floor.

Back against the wall.

Watching the door.

For hours.

Adrian leaned forward slightly.

“Zoom in,” he said.

The technician complied.

Eliza wasn’t scrolling a phone.

Wasn’t resting.

Wasn’t distracted.

She was… waiting.

Like someone expecting something that should never arrive.

At 3:41 a.m., Isla appeared on the camera.

Small.

Barefoot.

Not crying loudly—just breathing in broken intervals.

Eliza didn’t move quickly.

She simply opened her arms.

Isla walked into them like it was the only place in the house that didn’t echo.

And Eliza whispered something.

Not audible.

But Isla’s shoulders dropped instantly.

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Run the audio enhancement,” he said.

Static filled the room.

Then fragments.

Eliza’s voice, barely above breath:

“You’re safe. Not here. Not now. I’m here.”

Adrian stopped the recording.

The room went still.

Not because of what was seen.

But because of what was missing.

No abuse.

No violence.

No instruction.

Only repetition.

Care.

Presence.

But still—

Isla’s fear didn’t come from nowhere.

May you like

And Adrian knew that.

Someone else had built it.
