Chapter 2 – The Letter That Changed Everything

Evelyn locked herself inside the private library of Hart Manor.

Outside, reporters still covered the glamorous charity gala.

Inside...

Her world quietly collapsed.

She broke the wax seal.

Lily's handwriting appeared across the first page.

"If you're reading this, I have already failed to stay alive long enough to protect him."

Evelyn's vision blurred.

"Your son never died."

The room spun.

"The night he was born, your father ordered Dr. Samuel Pierce to report him dead. He believed an illegitimate child would destroy the Hart family's reputation."

Evelyn's hands began shaking uncontrollably.

"I couldn't let them kill an innocent baby."

"So I took him."

"I disappeared before they could stop me."

"I raised him as my own grandson after my daughter passed away during childbirth."

"His name is Noah."

"He never knew the truth."

"Please don't let your father's sins become his inheritance."

Attached to the letter was a hospital bracelet.

Baby Boy Hart.

Date of birth.

Time of birth.

Mother:

Evelyn Hart.

Tears rolled silently down Evelyn's face.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

Only the quiet grief of twenty stolen years.

She rushed downstairs.

Noah sat at the enormous dining table, nervously holding a warm cup of soup.

He looked painfully small inside the mansion.

"Evelyn?"

He still didn't know what to call her.

She knelt beside him.

Very gently...

She touched his cheek.

"You don't have to call me Mrs. Hart anymore."

He tilted his head.

"Why?"

She smiled through tears.

"Because..."

Her voice finally broke.

"I'm your grandmother."

The boy stared at her.

Neither of them moved.

Then Noah slowly reached into his pocket and pulled out a tiny blue knitted baby sock.

"My grandma Lily always kept this."

"I thought maybe it belonged to someone important."

Evelyn recognized it instantly.

She had knitted it herself while waiting for her son to be born.

She covered her mouth.

Then, without another word...

She pulled Noah into the first real embrace he had ever known.
