Chapter 14 - THE PRICE OF A SON
The countdown made everyone reckless.
Gabriel became quieter.
Elena made too many phone calls.
Declan left the hospital against medical advice.
Victor tried to do the same until Serrano threatened him with actual restraints.
Norah drank three cups of coffee and forgot all of them before they became cold.
At 10:17 p.m., they learned what Aegis was protecting.
Not a city security office.
Not a hospital network.
A private data center beneath a decommissioned municipal courthouse.
Aegis had purchased the underground server complex four years earlier through a shell company.
Norah traced the acquisition payment to Mercer Industrial Holdings.
The Delaware company.
The conspiracy's modern heart.
"If Thomas's release is running through Aegis, we need physical access," Norah said.
Declan sat at the hotel dining table with his side bandaged beneath a fresh shirt.
"Why physical?"
"Because the archive is probably on an isolated system."
"Like Victor's bunker was isolated?"
"Less isolated than advertised."
Gabriel looked at Elena.
"Can your foundation credentials get us inside?"
She shook her head.
"Aegis revoked them after the fire."
"Victor?"
"His administrator token is compromised."
Norah looked at the credential list.
Four people had original executive prefixes.
Gabriel.
Declan.
Victor.
Luca.
A fifth had been added through Elena's foundation after the acquisition.
Elena.
"Your token might still work," Norah said.
Elena's face tightened.
"Maybe."
Gabriel noticed.
"What?"
"Nothing."
He stared at her.
Elena looked away.
Norah saw fear.
Not ordinary fear.
Maternal fear.
"Where is Nico?"
Elena's eyes snapped to Norah.
Gabriel stood.
"Elena."
She said nothing.
"Where is your son?"
Her composure broke.
"Gone."
Gabriel's face emptied.
"Since when?"
"An hour."
"And you didn't tell me?"
"They said they would kill him if I did."
Gabriel slammed both hands onto the table.
"Who?"
Elena flinched.
That seemed to hurt him more than the answer.
"Luca called."
Norah's chest tightened.
"Luca personally?"
"Yes."
"Did you hear Nico?"
"Yes."
"What did Luca want?"
Elena looked at Norah.
The answer was obvious.
"Me."
Norah's voice was quiet.
Elena began to cry without sound.
"He wants you inside Aegis."
"To stop the release."
"He said only you can identify Thomas's master key."
Gabriel walked around the table.
"You are not handing her over."
Elena looked at him.
"Then my son dies."
"We find him."
"In forty-seven hours?"
"Before that."
"You couldn't find Margaret before they moved her twice."
Gabriel stopped.
Elena's words were cruel because they were true.
Norah stepped between them.
"What exactly did Luca say?"
Elena wiped her face.
"Midnight."
"Aegis service entrance."
"My credential gets us to sublevel three."
"Then I bring you to the core room."
"And?"
"He releases Nico after you stop the archive."
Declan laughed bitterly from the table.
"And then he releases a unicorn."
Elena glared at him.
"You have a better plan?"
Declan's face closed.
His mother had died because of the same kind of leverage.
"No."
The word was almost a whisper.
Gabriel looked at Norah.
"You're not going."
Norah folded her arms.
"We have established this conversation pattern."
"This time I mean it."
"You meant it every time."
"Luca specifically wants you."
"Which gives me value."
"Which gives him a reason to keep you."
"Until I stop the release."
"And then?"
Norah did not answer.
Gabriel moved closer.
"He kills you."
"Maybe."
"No."
"Nico is eight."
Gabriel's eyes flashed.
"I know how old my nephew is."
"Then stop pretending there is a choice that doesn't risk someone."
Silence.
Elena turned away.
Declan studied the floor.
Gabriel's voice dropped.
"You think I can trade you more easily because you're not family."
Norah stared at him.
"I didn't say that."
"You don't need to."
The room felt suddenly too small.
"Gabriel—"
"No."
His anger was no longer strategic.
"You were my accountant forty-eight hours ago."
"I know."
"Now every person hunting me wants you."
"I know."
"My uncle burned your house."
"I was there."
"Luca has your mother taken twice."
"I noticed."
"And you continue to volunteer for every door that might have a gun behind it."
Norah's own anger rose.
"Because standing behind you has not exactly been safe."
He stopped.
The sentence hung between them.
Norah regretted it immediately.
Not because it was false.
Because she saw where it landed.
Gabriel stepped back.
"Fine."
His voice became formal.
"We do it your way."
That hurt more than shouting would have.
At 11:52 p.m., Elena and Norah approached the Aegis service entrance alone.
Gabriel, Declan, and three trusted men waited two blocks away in an underground utility corridor Victor had identified from old city plans.
The plan was simple enough to fail spectacularly.
Elena would use her credential.
Norah would enter.
Gabriel would follow through the utility corridor once Victor remotely killed the internal cameras from his hospital bed.
They would locate Nico before allowing Norah near the core server.
At least that was the plan everyone had agreed to.
Elena's token opened the first door.
Then the second.
At sublevel two, a biometric scanner appeared.
Elena placed her hand on it.
Green.
Norah watched her sister-in-law's face.
Too pale.
"Are you okay?"
"No."
"Good answer."
They entered an elevator.
Elena pressed B3.
The doors closed.
Norah touched the transmitter hidden beneath her collar.
One tap.
Moving.
Gabriel would receive the vibration through the paired receiver.
Elena saw the motion.
"He gave you another one."
"He likes accessories."
Elena almost smiled.
Then her eyes filled again.
"I'm sorry."
Norah's stomach turned.
"For what?"
Elena pressed the emergency stop.
The elevator halted between floors.
Norah stared at her.
Elena moved faster than expected.
She ripped the transmitter from Norah's collar and crushed it beneath her heel.
"Elena."
"I'm sorry."
"What did you do?"
Elena pressed another button.
A hidden panel opened beside the elevator controls.
Inside was a security override.
She entered a code.
The doors opened onto a dark maintenance platform.
Two armed men waited.
Norah stepped back.
Elena grabbed her hand.
"Please don't fight."
Norah looked at her.
"You changed the plan."
"Luca sent me a video ten minutes before we left."
"Of Nico?"
Elena nodded.
"He had a gun against his head."
One of the men took Norah's arms.
She resisted once.
The second man raised a weapon.
Elena flinched.
"Don't hurt her."
The man laughed.
"That's not your decision."
Norah looked at Elena.
"Where are they taking me?"
Elena's face collapsed.
"I don't know."
"Does Gabriel?"
"No."
"You locked him out."
"I had to."
Norah understood the shape of the betrayal.
Elena had not brought her to Luca's trap.
She had rerouted her before Gabriel's team could follow.
"What did you tell Gabriel?"
Elena whispered.
"That B3 was clear."
A distant explosion shook the elevator shaft.
Elena screamed.
The armed men did not react.
Norah's blood went cold.
"What was that?"
One man smiled.
"Utility corridor."
Elena stared at him.
"No."
"Luca said there might be rats."
She lunged at the man.
He struck her across the face with the back of his hand.
Norah kicked his knee.
The second man grabbed Norah around the waist.
Another explosion rolled through the concrete.
Lights flickered.
Elena fell against the wall.
"Gabriel!"
Norah fought harder.
The man twisted her arms behind her.
"He's dead."
"You don't know that."
"Nobody walks out of that tunnel."
They dragged Norah through the maintenance platform.
Elena crawled after them.
"Norah!"
Norah looked back.
For one second, their eyes met.
Elena mouthed two words.
Find Nico.
Then the door slammed between them.
Norah was forced into a service vehicle hidden in an underground loading bay.
A hood came over her head.
Her wrists were bound.
The vehicle accelerated.
She counted turns.
Left.
Right.
Long straight stretch.
Ramp upward.
Seven minutes.
Another right.
The city disappeared into sound.
She did not know whether Gabriel had survived.
She did not know whether Nico was alive.
She did not know where Luca was taking her.
But she knew one thing.
The men had said Luca ordered the explosion before Norah ever reached the core room.
That meant stopping Thomas's release was not Luca's only objective.
He wanted Gabriel removed first.
