Chapter 10 - THIRTY STEPS

The morning of the hearing began with rain and ended with blood.
Khloe arrived at the Montgomery County Courthouse shortly after eight.
She wore a navy maternity dress, a cream coat, and low black shoes.
Harrison had asked her to wear trousers and supportive boots.
Khloe chose the dress because it made her feel like herself.
She was tired of dressing for fear.
Daniel met her beneath the covered entrance.
Two state troopers walked behind them.
Reporters crowded the lower steps.
Questions rose from every direction.
“Mrs. Harrington, did your husband steal embryos?”
“Is Evan Mercer your biological son?”
“Did Harrison Cole fabricate the trust allegations?”
“Are you mentally competent to raise your unborn child?”
Khloe kept moving.
The last question hurt most because Richard had designed it to hurt.
Inside, Harrison waited beside the security checkpoint.
He adjusted the collar of her coat the way he had before their mother's funeral.
“You do not answer anyone except me and the evaluator.”
“What if the judge speaks to me?”
“Mercer will not remain judge by noon.”
“You sound certain.”
“I filed the pre-signed order evidence with the judicial conduct board.”
“The federal judge ordered him to explain every trust payment.”
“He cannot survive both.”
Khloe looked toward the elevators.
Richard stood near the private corridor with Martin Vale.
He wore a charcoal suit and a dark blue tie.
Vanessa was not beside him.
Richard met Khloe's gaze.
He smiled as though they had arrived for a charity luncheon.
Then he looked at her stomach.
Possession moved across his face.
Khloe turned away.
The psychiatric evaluation occurred in a glass-walled conference room near the court clinic.
Daniel remained outside the door.
Harrison observed from the adjacent room with permission from the federal court.
The evaluator, Dr. Elaine Ford, had no connection to Crane.
She asked Khloe about sleep, appetite, fear, and grief.
She asked whether Khloe believed powerful people were conspiring against her.
Khloe answered carefully.
“I believe specific people committed specific acts.”
“Do you believe your husband wants to harm you?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“He attempted to drug me.”
“He falsified medical records.”
“He stole embryos created from my genetic material.”
“He prepared legal documents to take my daughter after birth.”
Dr. Ford looked at the evidence binder.
“Those are extraordinary allegations.”
“They are supported by laboratory tests, financial records, and sworn witnesses.”
“Do you hear voices?”
“Only attorneys.”
Dr. Ford almost smiled.
“Do you intend to harm yourself?”
“No.”
“Your husband?”
“No.”
“Vanessa Kensington?”
Khloe paused.
“No.”
The honest pause mattered more than a quick denial.
Dr. Ford noticed.
“Are you angry with her?”
“Yes.”
“Do you feel out of control?”
“No.”
“I feel more in control than I have in years.”
The evaluation lasted ninety minutes.
Dr. Ford concluded that Khloe showed trauma, anger, and justified fear.
She found no evidence of psychosis, cognitive incapacity, or danger to either child.
Harrison submitted the report before Mercer could suppress it.
At ten-thirty, the recusal hearing began.
Mercer entered from the judges' corridor with a flushed face.
He refused to step down.
He called Harrison's allegations a personal attack.
He described the monthly trust payments as reimbursement for private educational expenses.
Harrison asked whose education they funded.
Mercer invoked juvenile confidentiality.
Harrison placed Evan's photograph on the evidence screen.
“Is this the child?”
Mercer ordered the image removed.
“Is this Evan Mercer?”
“I will hold you in contempt.”
“Is this the child whose biological mother sits behind me?”
Mercer struck the gavel.
“Mr. Cole.”
“Did Richard Harrington deliver this child to your home four years ago?”
“Bailiff.”
“Did you accept control of a stolen child in exchange for trust payments?”
The courtroom doors opened.
Two federal agents entered with an attorney from the judicial conduct board.
Mercer's face changed.
The federal judge had issued an immediate administrative suspension.
Mercer was ordered to surrender his courtroom, chambers, and electronic devices.
For the first time, the judge looked small.
He removed his robe without speaking.
As he passed Harrison, he whispered something no microphone caught.
Harrison's expression did not change.
Khloe saw his right hand close around the edge of the counsel table.
A replacement judge took the bench at noon.
She was Judge Rebecca Shaw, a former prosecutor known for disliking theatrical lawyers and wealthy defendants equally.
She preserved the trust freeze.
She upheld the order locating Evan.
She prohibited Richard from contacting Khloe outside counsel.
She also ordered the immediate seizure of Richard's corporate devices.
Richard sat beside Martin Vale without reacting.
Vanessa entered during the final ruling.
She wore a black wool dress and red-soled heels.
Her dark hair fell in controlled waves.
She sat behind Richard.
When Khloe turned, Vanessa smiled.
The message from the previous day seemed to burn between them.
After court, Harrison insisted they use the secured underground exit.
A fire alarm changed the plan.
Sirens flashed throughout the lower corridor.
Court security redirected everyone toward the main staircase.
Daniel argued with a deputy.
The deputy said smoke had been reported near the garage.
Harrison received a call from the federal agents seizing Harrington Commercial's servers.
Naomi needed immediate authorization to preserve a trust database.
For less than one minute, the group separated.
Harrison moved six feet toward a quiet alcove.
Daniel stepped ahead to clear a path through reporters.
Khloe remained near the top of the stairs with one trooper behind her.
Richard approached from the courtroom doors.
The trooper blocked him.
“You are under a no-contact order.”
“My attorney needs to speak to her attorney.”
“Then your attorney can do it.”
Martin Vale distracted the trooper with a document.
Richard moved closer to Khloe.
“Evan has been moved.”
Khloe's heart struck hard.
“Where?”
“Somewhere Harrison will never find him.”
“You are violating the order.”
“You care about paper too much.”
“You care about children too little.”
Richard's jaw tightened.
“You think Evan is yours because of a toothbrush.”
“He is mine because you stole him from me.”
“He exists because I made a decision you were too weak to make.”
Khloe stared at him.
“What decision?”
“To preserve the Harrington line.”
“With your dead brother's child.”
Richard's eyes flickered.
“You do not understand the company.”
“I understand you murdered my marriage for voting shares.”
“You were never capable of carrying the burden.”
“I carried your daughter while you tried to poison me.”
Richard leaned closer.
“She may not be my daughter.”
The cruelty was deliberate.
Khloe knew their natural conception made paternity possible, but Richard wanted doubt to wound her.
She did not give him the reaction.
“You will not touch either child again.”
A woman's voice came from behind Richard.
“You do not own every child you can produce.”
Vanessa walked toward them.
Her face was tight with fury.
Richard turned.
“Not here.”
“You told me the embryo belonged to us.”
“Lower your voice.”
“You said Khloe abandoned it.”
Reporters began noticing the confrontation.
Cameras lifted.
Richard moved between Vanessa and the crowd.
“We will discuss this privately.”
Vanessa looked past him at Khloe.
“You filed the order.”
“I stopped you from receiving my stolen genetic material.”
“You ruined my chance to become a mother.”
“No.”
Khloe's voice remained calm.
“Richard used your desperation to steal from me.”
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“You think you are better than me.”
“I think you slept with my husband while mocking my miscarriages.”
The color left Vanessa's face.
Khloe had never confronted her directly before.
“You read our messages.”
“Yes.”
Richard reached for Vanessa's arm.
She pulled away.
“You said she knew nothing.”
“Stop talking.”
“You said Harrison had no evidence.”
“Vanessa.”
“You said the doctor would handle her before the baby came.”
The air around them changed.
Khloe looked at Richard.
The trooper stopped speaking to Martin Vale.
Daniel turned from the lower steps.
Harrison ended his call.
Richard's voice became low.
“Walk away.”
Vanessa heard the command.
She also saw every camera.
Humiliation replaced grief.
She stepped toward Khloe.
“This is your fault.”
Richard did not stop her.
“You built a life around another woman's husband.”
Khloe's answer was quiet.
“You do not get to blame me because he lied to both of us.”
Vanessa's hands curled.
“You had everything.”
“I had a house full of surveillance and a husband who scheduled my medical collapse.”
“You had his name.”
“You can have it.”
Khloe moved toward Harrison.
Vanessa blocked her.
“Do not turn your back on me.”
“I am finished looking at you.”
Khloe stepped around her.
Richard's right hand moved near his jacket.
Two fingers tapped the silver edge of his cufflink.
Vanessa looked at the movement.
The signal lasted less than a second.
Khloe did not see it.
Deputy Alvarez did.
So did a court clerk standing beside the doors.
Vanessa placed both hands against Khloe's shoulders.
The first contact was not yet a shove.
Khloe turned in surprise.
“Do not touch me.”
Vanessa's face twisted.
“You took my baby.”
“There was never your baby.”
Richard spoke from behind her.
“Vanessa.”
His voice held one word and an entire instruction.
“Now.”
Vanessa shoved.
Khloe's heel slipped over the edge of the top step.
Her hands reached for air.
For one impossible moment, she remained upright.
Then her body tilted backward.
She saw Harrison turn.
She saw Daniel begin to run.
She saw Richard catch Vanessa by the wrist and pull her away from the edge.
He protected the woman who pushed her.
Khloe struck the first step with her hip.
The second hit her shoulder.
The third drove the breath from her lungs.
Marble and sky exchanged places again and again.
Her arms closed over her stomach.
Her daughter's movement stopped.
At the bottom, pain became white silence.
Harrison's face appeared above her.
His hands were bleeding.
“Khloe.”
She tried to tell him about the signal.
She tried to tell him Richard had brought her outside.
She tried to tell him the fire alarm was not an accident.
Only three words escaped.
“Richard knew.”
Then the world disappeared.
At the top of the stairs, Vanessa stared at her hands.
Richard pulled her close enough to whisper.
“Cry.”
She looked at him in horror.
“What?”
“Cry now.”
The courthouse camera had stopped recording eleven seconds before the shove.
Richard knew exactly when it would return.
He counted silently while Harrison knelt in blood below.
At twenty-three seconds, the camera feed came back.
Richard released Vanessa and raised both hands as though shocked.

By then, she was crying exactly as he had ordered.
