CHAPTER 4 — “CHOICE OF A FATHER” (FINAL CHAPTER)

The knock came once.
No urgency.
No hesitation.
Just certainty.
Nora didn’t open the door immediately.
Liam stood beside her.
The twins behind him.
Jonah gripping her sleeve.
When she finally opened it…
the veteran was there.
But not alone.
Two men stood behind him.
Dark coats.
No emotion.
No introduction.
One of them spoke.
“He belongs to us.”
Nora didn’t move.
“He doesn’t belong to anyone.”
A pause.
The veteran finally looked at her.
And this time, his voice was different.
Not tired.
Not broken.
Focused.
“I made a choice when I came back,” he said.
One of the men stepped forward.
“You don’t get choices.”
The veteran didn’t flinch.
“I already made it.”
He turned slightly toward Nora.
For the first time, no hesitation in his eyes.
“I stayed because I wanted to see them again.”
A breath.
“But I won’t let them take that from me again.”
Liam stepped forward.
“You’re leaving again?”
The veteran looked at him.
Long.
Quiet.
“No,” he said.
Then he looked at Nora.
“I’m staying this time. Even if it costs everything.”
The air changed.
The men behind him shifted.
Tension snapped like a wire.
Nora’s voice was barely audible.
“Then what happens now?”
The veteran exhaled once.
And answered:
“Now… I stop running.”
A beat.
Then chaos.
The street filled with motion—doors opening, footsteps hitting pavement, someone shouting a name no one could hear clearly.
Liam pulled the twins back.
Jonah screamed for his mother.
And Nora grabbed the veteran’s hand without thinking.
Not because she trusted him completely.
But because for the first time in years…
he didn’t let go.
ENDING SHOT
The last thing seen is the broken apartment window.
Inside, a family standing together.
Outside, sirens approaching.
And the veteran stepping forward—
blocking the door.
May you like
Like he finally decided where he belonged.
FADE OUT.
