CHAPTER 28 — THE TWO BLUE KEYS
The moving chamber emerged onto a forgotten platform beneath the clock tower.
Charles’s condition was deteriorating.
Daniel helped him from the medical chair.
Gabriel leaned against the wall, pale from blood loss.
Victoria could barely remain conscious.
Adrian pressed his jacket against her wound.
The archive countdown showed ninety seconds.
A staircase led upward.
Margaret had sealed it from above.
Elias pointed toward a narrow mail chute.
“I can climb through there.”
Claire shook her head immediately.
“No more tunnels.”
Noah stepped beside Elias.
“We can both fit.”
Daniel looked at the chute.
“It opens inside the clock mechanism.”
Claire held both boys.
Margaret had spent years using their fear against them.
Now everyone was asking them to enter another dark space.
“No,” Claire said. “The adults will find another way.”
Charles touched her arm.
“There may not be one.”
“Then we make one.”
Gabriel examined the wall.
A row of old parcel lockers stood beside the staircase.
One had a blue keyhole.
Elias held up his plastic key.
He inserted it.
The locker opened.
Inside was a second blue key.
Noah looked confused.
“But mine is red.”
Charles nodded.
“The colors were changed after Margaret found the original keys.”
He looked at Gabriel.
“I gave one blue key to each of my sons when they were children.”
Gabriel stared at the key.
“You told us they opened the clock room.”
“They still do.”
Daniel took the second key.
Two locks were hidden beside the sealed staircase.
The brothers inserted both keys.
They turned them together.
The wall opened.
A private elevator waited behind it.
For one moment, neither brother moved.
Then Gabriel looked at Daniel.
“You jumped into the water after me?”
“Yes.”
“Why did you stop searching?”
“I didn’t.”
Daniel opened his wallet.
Inside was an old photograph of Gabriel at sixteen.
“I carried this for twenty-two years.”
Gabriel looked away.
“Do not make this sentimental.”
Daniel almost smiled.
“You were always terrible at apologies.”
“And you were always terrible at timing.”
They entered the elevator together.
Claire remained with the boys, Charles and the injured Victoria.
Adrian joined Daniel and Gabriel.
The doors began closing.
Noah ran forward and gave Daniel the red key.
“For Mom.”
Daniel took it.
The elevator rose.
Claire looked at Charles.
“Will the clock symbol stop the purge?”
“It can authorize the final upload.”
“Upload to where?”
“Every newspaper, court and federal office I selected before Margaret imprisoned me.”
“Then why didn’t the files upload years ago?”
“The system required proof that both of my sons were alive.”
Claire understood.
Daniel and Gabriel were not merely needed to unlock Room Zero.
Their survival activated Charles’s final plan.
The clock symbol in Claire’s hand began blinking.
SON ONE VERIFIED.
Then a second light appeared.
SON TWO VERIFIED.
The archive countdown reached thirty seconds.
Claire pressed the symbol.
A message appeared.
UPLOAD REQUIRES FINAL WITNESS.
“Who is the witness?” Claire asked.
Charles looked at Victoria.
“She is.”
Victoria opened her eyes.
“What do I have to do?”
“Confess.”
A camera rose from the console.
Victoria looked into it.
“My name is Victoria Cross. For nineteen years, I carried out illegal orders for Margaret Vale.”
The countdown reached fifteen seconds.
Victoria continued speaking.
She confessed to the hospital records.
The kidnapping.
The hidden payments.
Evelyn’s death.
The corrupted police officers.
The false boating accident.
At five seconds, the screen asked:
TRANSMIT CONFESSION?
Victoria pressed YES.
The countdown stopped at one.
