CHAPTER 2 — “What the Child Saw”

Nathaniel: “Lily… come here.”

Lily: “I didn’t do anything.”

Nathaniel: “I didn’t say you did.”

Lily: “But you’re looking at me like I’m in trouble.”

Nathaniel: “I’m looking at you because you were there.”

Lily: “Yes.”

Nathaniel: “At the stairs?”

Lily: “Yes.”

Nathaniel: “Tell me what happened.”

Lily: “She pushed her.”

Vivien: “That’s enough.”

Nathaniel: “Don’t.”

Vivien: “Nathaniel, she’s a child. She didn’t understand what she saw.”

Lily: “I understand.”

Nathaniel: “What did you see, Lily?”

Lily: “Your fiancée stood behind her.”

Vivien: “I helped your mother walk. That’s all.”

Lily: “She didn’t help.”

Silence.

Nathaniel: “Then what did she do?”

Lily: “She let go.”

Vivien: “That’s not true.”

Nathaniel: “Lily doesn’t lie.”

Vivien: “Children misunderstand fear. Shock. Movement.”

Lily: “She looked at her before she fell.”

Nathaniel: “Looked how?”

Lily: “Like she was deciding.”
