Chapter 2: The Locked Room

Two days later, the courthouse scandal had reached every newspaper in the city.

The Mercer family mansion, once a symbol of old money and untouchable pride, now felt like a tomb.

Ethan stood in his father’s private study, a room he had never been allowed to enter as a child.

Claire stood beside him, still wearing no ring.

The ragged woman’s name was Mara.

She had once been a nurse at St. Agnes Hospital, the place where Ethan and Claire were born.

“I tried to speak years ago,” Mara said quietly. “But your father destroyed my life. He had me fired, accused me of stealing medication, and made sure no hospital would hire me again.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“My whole life… I defended him.”

Claire opened a locked drawer using a key Mara had kept hidden for twenty-nine years.

Inside were files.

Birth records.

Bank transfers.

Letters signed by Arthur Mercer.

And one photograph that made Claire sit down slowly.

It showed her mother, young and pale, holding a newborn baby girl.

On the back, written in shaking handwriting:

Forgive me, Claire. I wanted to keep you.

Claire’s tears fell silently onto the photograph.

Richard Bennett had not adopted her out of love alone.

He had been paid.

The Mercers had bought silence.

Ethan looked at Claire, shame heavy in his eyes.

“I almost married my sister.”

Claire flinched, but not from disgust.

From grief.

“We were both victims,” she said softly. “Don’t carry his sin like it belongs to you.”

That night, Ethan made a decision.

He called every major newspaper.

Then he called the police.

And finally, he called the Mercer family lawyer.

“My father’s legacy ends today,” he said.
