Chapter 8: The Old River Bridge

John chased Victor across the rooftop and down an exterior fire escape.

Victor jumped onto a nearby parking structure and disappeared between abandoned vehicles.

Police units closed in from both sides.

Victor fired several shots to slow them down.

John followed him toward the old river bridge, which had been closed for repairs.

Rain began to fall.

At the center of the bridge, Victor stopped.

There was nowhere left to run.

He turned with his gun raised.

John aimed at him.

“It ends here.”

Victor laughed.

“You said that at the warehouse.”

“The bomb squad found all six devices.”

Victor’s smile faded.

John continued.

“The timers were fake. You never had enough explosive material.”

Victor’s eyes hardened.

“You’re lying.”

“You wanted me away from my family. That was the real plan.”

Victor fired.

John moved behind a concrete barrier as the bullet struck the railing.

John returned fire.

The shot hit Victor in the shoulder.

His gun fell onto the bridge.

John approached carefully.

Victor dropped to one knee but continued smiling.

“You still don’t understand.”

“Understand what?”

“My brother wasn’t the leader.”

John stopped.

Victor looked toward the river.

“He worked for people far more powerful than either of us.”

John pulled him to the ground and placed him in handcuffs.

“Then you’re going to tell me their names.”

Victor laughed.

“You’ll wish I hadn’t.”
