CHAPTER 3: THE HOUSE THAT WAITED TOO LONG

Three days later, Elias stood in front of a small house outside Ravenridge.

It was not the kind of home that waited for heroes.

It was the kind of home that survived absence.

The porch light flickered slightly in the afternoon wind. A forgotten toy lay near the steps. The air smelled like rain that had not decided whether to fall.

Inside, everything was quiet.

Too quiet.

Lila slept in a crib placed near a window. Elias stood beside it without touching anything at first. Like he feared his presence might disrupt something still fragile.

He had faced combat zones, ambushes, and silence under fire.

But this silence…

This was heavier.

The woman watched him from the doorway.

“You don’t have to be perfect,” she said.

Elias exhaled slowly.

“I know how to survive,” he replied. “I don’t know how to stay.”

A pause.

Then he finally reached into the crib.

Lila stirred.

Her small hand wrapped instinctively around his finger.

And Elias Mercer—trained to hold weapons steady under pressure—trembled at the gentlest grip he had ever felt.

That night, he didn’t sleep.

May you like

He sat beside the crib, watching a life that did not ask him for redemption.

Only presence.
