CHAPTER 4: WHAT RETURNS HOME

Weeks passed.

The world outside continued its noise, but Elias Mercer moved differently now.

Slower.

Careful.

Real.

He learned the rhythm of bottles, midnight crying, and the strange silence that follows when a child finally falls asleep in your arms. He learned that exhaustion could feel like peace when it had meaning.

But not everything from war stays behind.

One evening, a black SUV parked outside the house.

No sirens.

No announcement.

Just the quiet arrival of something Elias already recognized before stepping outside.

Old war does not forget its soldiers.

Inside the vehicle, a man in uniform spoke only one sentence:

“They want you back on rotation.”

Elias looked at the road for a long moment.

Then back at the house.

Through the window, he saw Lila—standing now with support, unsteady, looking toward the door as if she somehow understood distance already.

For the first time, Elias did not respond immediately.

Because this time, the battlefield was not the choice.

It was what he was leaving behind.

He walked back inside.

The woman looked up immediately. She didn’t need to ask.

Elias spoke quietly.

“I’m done running missions.”

A pause.

Then he added:

“I already completed the only one that mattered.”

Silence filled the room.

Outside, the SUV engine remained running.

But it never mattered.

Because when Elias Mercer sat down beside the crib that night, and Lila reached for his hand without fear, something final happened.

Not a victory.

Not a loss.

But a return that no longer required permission.

May you like

The war had ended for him long before anyone signed it on paper.

And for the first time in 149 days…
Elias Mercer was exactly where he was meant to be.
