Chapter 1: The Sirens That Didn't Belong to the Police

Caleb had expected panic.
He had expected Elena to cry.
To beg.
To call 911.
Instead, she had spoken six words that neither he nor Sabrina understood.
Protocol Crimson. Authorization File Phoenix.
The silence that followed lasted less than thirty seconds.
Then the estate began to shake.
Not from thunder.
From rotor blades.
A deafening roar swept across the lake as two matte-black helicopters descended over the Ashford estate.
Their lights washed the mansion in harsh white beams.
Sabrina staggered backward.
"What is that?"
Caleb forced himself to smile.
"Private medical evacuation."
But even he didn't believe his own answer.
The helicopters never landed on the front lawn.
One hovered above the roof.
The second settled directly beside the private dock.
At the same time—
Six black armored SUVs burst through the wrought-iron gates.
Not one stopped at the security checkpoint.
The guards opened the gates before the vehicles even slowed.
Someone had already overridden every security system on the property.
Doors flew open.
Men and women wearing charcoal tactical uniforms moved with frightening precision.
No shouting.
No confusion.
Each carried medical packs, encrypted radios, and discreet sidearms.
Across every shoulder was the same silver insignia.
A black phoenix.
One medic slid across the blood-covered floor beside Elena.
"Mrs. Blackstone, don't move."
Another shielded her body with a ballistic blanket while scanning every entrance.
A third calmly announced,
"Scene secured."
Caleb stepped forward.
"I'm her husband."
The nearest operative never even looked at him.
"Step back."
"I said I'm her husband."
"You are now a potential suspect."
The words landed harder than any punch.
Caleb laughed bitterly.
"You people have no authority here."
Before anyone answered—
Every phone inside the kitchen vibrated simultaneously.
Caleb's.
Sabrina's.
Even the wall-mounted office tablet.
One notification.
ASHFORD GLOBAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS — EMERGENCY SESSION INITIATED
Then another.
ALL EXECUTIVE ACCOUNT ACCESS SUSPENDED
Then another.
COURT-ORDERED ASSET PRESERVATION IN EFFECT
Caleb frowned.
"What the hell..."
His smartwatch chimed again.
Unknown Caller.
He answered immediately.
"This is Caleb Ashford."
A calm female voice replied.
"Mr. Ashford."
"This is the Office of the State Attorney General."
"You are instructed not to leave your current location."
"You are under investigation for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit fraud, financial coercion, and destruction of fiduciary assets."
His face lost all color.
"You can't—"
The call ended.
No explanation.
No negotiation.
Only finality.
Meanwhile, the trauma physician carefully examined Elena.
"We're losing blood."
"We're taking her now."
Elena grabbed his sleeve.
"My baby?"
The doctor looked directly into her eyes.
"I won't lie to you."
"The next fifteen minutes decide everything."
The helicopter lifted before anyone else could speak.
As Elena disappeared into the gray afternoon sky, she watched Caleb standing motionless below.
