Chapter 2: The Family Caleb Never Investigated

Three hours later.
Blackstone Medical Center.
The operating room lights burned for nearly four hours.
Outside, dozens of attorneys, physicians, investigators, and security directors waited without speaking.
No reporters.
No politicians.
No cameras.
Only professionals.
At exactly 8:47 p.m., the operating room doors opened.
"The mother survived."
A collective breath escaped the hallway.
"The baby survived."
Several nurses quietly wiped away tears.
Elena awoke just after midnight.
Every muscle ached.
Her abdomen was wrapped in bandages.
Tiny monitors surrounded the incubator beside her bed.
Inside lay a little girl no larger than a loaf of bread.
Breathing.
Alive.
Elena cried silently.
A familiar voice interrupted the room.
"I told you never to underestimate your enemies."
She turned slowly.
An elderly man entered with a silver cane.
His posture remained straight despite his age.
His sharp blue eyes hadn't softened in decades.
Alexander Blackstone.
Her grandfather.
Officially, the world believed he had retired years earlier.
Officially, Blackstone Holdings had been dissolved.
Officially, the Blackstone fortune no longer existed.
Every one of those stories had been intentionally planted.
Alexander sat beside her bed.
"I wanted you to build your own life."
"So I hid ours."
Elena whispered,
"How much do you control?"
He smiled faintly.
"Enough."
He handed her a thin leather folder.
Inside were photographs.
Dozens of them.
Caleb meeting secretly with Sabrina.
Forged contracts.
Hidden offshore transfers.
Insurance policies.
Even surveillance footage from six months earlier.
Caleb had already discussed how to stage Elena's accidental death.
Her hands trembled.
"You knew?"
"I suspected."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Alexander sighed.
"Because suspicion isn't evidence."
"But attempted murder is."
Another folder appeared.
Federal warrants.
Financial seizure orders.
Recorded phone calls.
Bank records.
Every conversation Caleb thought had disappeared forever.
Alexander closed the file.
"He spent three years planning your destruction."
May you like
"He never realized..."
"...we spent three years documenting every step."
