Chapter 14 - THE MAN WHO CHOSE THE COMPANY

For seven seconds, Sarah made no sound.

Then the hospital heard a mother discover an empty bed.

"LILY!"

The scream tore down the pediatric corridor.

Felix was already moving.

He checked the bathroom.

Empty.

He looked beneath the bed as though six-year-old children could vanish into shadows.

Nothing.

Hospital security locked the floor.

Detective Ruiz shouted into her radio.

"No one leaves the building."

Sarah grabbed the nearest nurse.

"Where is my daughter?"

The nurse looked terrified.

"She was here two minutes ago."

"Where is she?"

"I don't know."

Sarah's knees gave way.

Felix caught her this time.

She fought him.

"Let go of me."

"Sarah."

"Find her."

"I will."

"Find her!"

He released her immediately.

Dr. Chen ran in.

"What happened?"

Ruiz pointed to the disconnected monitor.

"Who can move a pediatric patient without triggering an alert?"

"Clinical staff."

"Anyone else?"

"Transport with an order."

The charge nurse checked the electronic board.

Her face changed.

"There is a transport order."

Sarah stared.

"For what?"

"Imaging."

Dr. Chen stepped closer.

"I did not order imaging."

"It shows your name."

He looked at the screen.

"That is not my order."

Ruiz swore under her breath.

"Where would transport take her?"

"Radiology."

Felix ran.

Ruiz shouted after him.

"Kingsley, stop."

He did not.

Sarah followed.

The elevator was locked during the security hold.

They took the stairs.

Four floors down, Felix pushed through the radiology doors so hard they struck the wall.

"Lily Marlowe."

A receptionist looked up.

"Pediatric CT?"

"Where is she?"

"Room three."

Sarah ran past him.

Lily lay on a transport bed beside the scanner.

A technician stood near her, arguing with a nurse.

Sarah reached the bed and wrapped both arms around her daughter.

Lily woke, confused.

"Mom?"

Sarah could not speak.

She kissed her hair over and over.

Felix stopped in the doorway and bent forward with both hands on his knees.

His entire body shook.

Detective Ruiz arrived seconds later.

"Nobody moves."

The technician raised both hands.

"We didn't do anything."

"Who brought her down?"

"Transport."

"Name."

The nurse checked the order.

"Anthony Perez."

Hospital security looked at the staff roster.

No Anthony Perez worked in transport.

Sarah held Lily tighter.

"Did someone hurt you?"

Lily shook her head.

"A man said I needed pictures."

"What man?"

"Blue clothes."

"Did you know him?"

"No."

"Did he say anything else?"

Lily frowned.

"He said Daddy said it was okay."

Felix's face collapsed.

"I did not."

Lily looked at him.

"I know."

Sarah closed her eyes.

The words nearly destroyed him.

They took Lily back upstairs surrounded by police and hospital security.

This time, a uniformed officer sat inside the room.

No one argued.

The security team reconstructed Lily's unauthorized transport minute by minute.

At 3:14, someone entered a fake imaging order.

At 3:16, the false transporter arrived with a wheelchair.

At 3:17, the officer inside Lily's room was called into the hall because another child's monitor alarm had triggered two doors away.

At 3:18, Lily was moved.

The timing made Sarah cold.

"The monitor alarm."

Dr. Chen looked at her.

"What about it?"

"Was the other child actually in trouble?"

The charge nurse checked.

"No."

"The lead had been loosened."

Detective Ruiz's eyes hardened.

"Deliberately?"

"We cannot say yet."

Sarah laughed once.

"Say it anyway."

The nurse looked stricken.

"It appears someone entered that room briefly before the alarm."

Felix stared at the timeline.

"They created a distraction."

Ruiz nodded.

"Likely."

"Inside a pediatric floor."

"Yes."

Felix walked away from the table and put both hands against the wall.

Sarah could see rage moving through him.

Not loud.

Not theatrical.

More frightening because it had nowhere to go.

"I want every vendor contract for this hospital reviewed."

Ruiz looked at him.

"You do not run the investigation."

He turned.

"Then tell me what I can do."

"Stay with your daughter."

Felix almost snapped back.

Then he stopped.

The answer was too simple to fight.

Sarah watched him return to Lily's bedside.

He sat without speaking while Lily slept.

After a minute, he reached for the coloring book she had left open.

He turned one page.

Then another.

He did not touch her hand.

He simply stayed where she would see him if she woke.

Sarah stood outside the glass and realized this might be the first useful thing anyone had told Felix Kingsley to do all day.

At 3:29, the merger closing deadline had passed.

Sarah did not ask what happened.

Felix did not either.

Odette did.

Her phone had filled with alerts.

She read them in the hallway and went still.

"It closed."

Felix turned slowly.

"What?"

"The merger closed at 3:18."

"Graham did not sign."

"He was removed at 3:14."

"Who replaced him?"

Odette's expression was grim.

"Celeste."

Sarah stared at her.

"Celeste is CEO?"

"Interim executive signatory for the transaction."

Felix walked toward his mother.

"The board appointed my fiancee, who is under criminal investigation, to close a multibillion-dollar deal?"

"The board claims no charges have been filed."

Felix laughed.

It sounded almost unhinged.

"Of course they do."

Odette looked at the next message.

"She used the waiver."

Sarah's stomach turned.

"My waiver."

"Yes."

"The one I never knowingly signed."

"Yes."

Felix pulled out his phone.

"We go back to court."

Sarah grabbed his arm.

"No."

He looked at her.

"They just took Lily out of her room."

"And we got her back."

"Because we were lucky."

Her voice broke.

"I am not gambling again."

Felix stared at her.

"Then what do we do?"

"We protect her."

"And let Celeste own the evidence?"

"I don't care about the evidence."

"She will not stop because the merger closed."

Sarah knew he was right.

She hated him for it.

"Why not?"

Felix looked toward Lily.

"Because if she committed fraud to close the deal, Lily still has standing to unwind it."

Odette nodded.

"And Sarah still owns a potential claim to Marlowe House."

Sarah stared at both of them.

"So even after she gets what she wants, we are still dangerous."

"Yes."

The word came from Graham.

He stood at the end of the corridor with a detective and his attorney.

Felix went still.

Graham looked worse than any of them.

His tie was gone.

His shirt was wrinkled.

There was a bruise near his jaw.

Felix's gaze moved to it.

"What happened to you?"

"One of the board security people tried to keep me from leaving with copies of the audit logs."

"Did they hit you?"

"I fell into a conference table during a very sophisticated governance discussion."

Felix almost smiled.

Then he remembered everything else.

"You knew."

Graham's face changed.

"About Lily?"

"About the debt."

"Yes."

"About the shadow account."

"For six weeks."

"About Celeste accessing my trust files."

Graham looked at the floor.

Sarah saw Felix understand before the answer came.

"How long?"

Graham swallowed.

"Four months."

Felix took one step toward him.

"Four months."

"I can explain."

"Do it."

Graham looked at the detective beside him.

His lawyer nodded carefully.

"Four months ago, I discovered someone had used a legacy credential to access your vault."

"And you knew it was Celeste."

"I suspected it."

"Did you confront her?"

"Yes."

"And?"

Graham's face tightened.

"She knew about the hidden debt."

Odette went still.

"How much did she know?"

"Everything."

"How?"

"Thomas's archive."

Felix stared.

Graham continued.

"She told me that if I exposed her access, she would expose the guarantees before refinancing was in place."

"So you made a deal."

Graham did not answer.

Felix stepped closer.

"Say it."

"Yes."

Sarah watched two decades of friendship die in one syllable.

"What deal?" Felix asked.

"I would stop investigating her access to your personal files."

"In exchange for?"

"She would support the merger and keep the debt confidential until closing."

Felix's eyes were empty now.

"You traded my privacy for the company."

"I thought she was looking for leverage before the wedding."

"You did not ask what leverage?"

"I should have."

"You did not tell me."

"I should have."

"You let her read a trust that contained information about my daughter."

"I did not know Lily existed."

Felix laughed once.

"There it is."

Graham flinched.

"What?"

"The family motto."

Felix's voice shook.

"I did not know."

He looked at Odette.

"You did not know what Thomas would do."

Then Briggs.

"You did not know the records were fake."

Then Graham.

"You did not know there was a child behind the trust file."

He pointed toward Lily's room.

"Everybody was too busy not knowing to stop doing things that could destroy her."

Graham's eyes filled.

"Felix, I am sorry."

"No."

Felix stepped back.

"Do not give me that yet."

"I am not asking you to forgive me."

"Good."

Sarah looked at Graham.

"Did you authorize Martin Sloane to put anything on Lily's floor?"

"A clean marker toy."

"Did you know someone might switch it?"

"That was the point."

Sarah's anger exploded.

"The point?"

She moved toward him.

"My daughter almost stopped breathing so you could prove a theory."

"I did not know the replacement would be dangerous."

"You knew somebody planned a second medical event."

Graham had no answer.

Sarah shoved the heel of her hand against his chest.

Not hard enough to hurt him.

Hard enough to make him move back.

"You do not get to stand near her."

Graham nodded.

"You're right."

Detective Ruiz entered with another officer.

"We identified the fake transporter."

Sarah turned.

"Who?"

"A contract employee named Eric Daines."

"Foundation?"

"Former foundation facilities."

Felix's jaw tightened.

"Celeste?"

Ruiz held his gaze.

"We found a payment from a consulting entity linked to the merger team."

"Linked to who?"

"We are tracing it."

Sarah closed her eyes.

Still no final answer.

Still another layer.

Then Dana Mills from child services appeared.

Sarah's heart dropped.

"No."

Mills approached carefully.

"Sarah, I need to speak with you."

"My daughter was taken from her hospital room."

"I know."

"By a stranger using a fake medical order."

"I know."

"Then why are you looking at me like that?"

Mills glanced toward the court-appointed medical guardian.

"Because the judge has issued an emergency protective modification."

Sarah felt Felix move beside her.

"What modification?"

Mills spoke gently.

"Until hospital security determines how unauthorized people continue reaching Lily, neither parent can be alone with her."

Sarah stared.

"Neither parent?"

"You can remain on the floor."

"Can I sleep in her room?"

"No."

"Can I hold her if she wakes up afraid?"

Mills hesitated.

Sarah's face crumpled.

"Can I hold my daughter?"

"With staff present."

Sarah looked through the glass.

Lily slept after another exhausting day.

A police officer sat beside the door.

A nurse checked the monitor.

A court-appointed guardian reviewed a chart.

Everybody had authority now.

Everybody except the mother who had kept Lily alive for six years.

Felix's voice was quiet.

"How long?"

Mills answered.

"Until tomorrow's review hearing."

Sarah looked at the clock.

Seventeen hours.

That was the new time limit.

Seventeen hours in which Celeste controlled the merged company.

Seventeen hours in which Sarah could not be alone with her own child.

Seventeen hours in which someone inside the hospital still knew how to reach Lily.

Graham's phone rang.

He looked at the screen and went pale.

"What?" Felix asked.

Graham turned the phone toward them.

The caller identification read CELESTE ARDEN - CEO OFFICE.

Felix stared at him.

"Answer it."

Graham did.

Celeste's voice was calm.

"Graham, you have something that belongs to me."

He said nothing.

"The audit logs," she continued.

"They are with the police."

A pause.

"Then you made a very expensive mistake."

Felix stepped closer to the phone.

"Your merger is already closed, Celeste."

Silence.

Then she laughed softly.

"Felix."

His face tightened.

"Stay away from my daughter."

"Your daughter?"

Celeste's voice changed.

"You have known her for one day."

Sarah felt rage flood her chest.

Felix stayed controlled.

"And you have been planning around her since before she was born."

The silence on the line lasted too long.

Detective Ruiz motioned for everyone to stay quiet.

Celeste finally spoke.

"You still think this is about becoming Mrs. Kingsley."

"I think you poisoned every system you touched."

"Then you still do not understand your own company."

Felix's eyes narrowed.

"Explain it."

"No."

"Why call?"

"To give Graham one chance to return the Arden archive index and stop cooperating."

Graham laughed bitterly.

"You used me."

"You used me too."

"I never touched a child."

Celeste went silent.

Sarah leaned toward the phone.

"But you did."

Another pause.

"Sarah."

Hearing her name from Celeste made her skin crawl.

"If Lily is harmed again, I will spend the rest of my life making sure every person you ever lied to learns exactly what you are."

Celeste's voice dropped.

"You should spend that energy wondering why Thomas Arden was so afraid of Odette that he hid a second copy of your transition agreement."

Odette went white.

Sarah looked at her.

"What second copy?"

Celeste laughed once.

May you like

"Ask her what happened to page eighty-seven."

The call ended.
