Chapter 18 - THE DAY CELESTE LOST THE COMPANY
The next morning began with three victories and one terror.
At 6:10, Judge Marcus restored Sarah's full medical decision-making authority after Margaret Doyle's sworn statement and the forensic evidence from page eighty-seven A.
At 6:25, the court dismissed the emergency guardianship petition against Sarah as unsupported and referred the forged medical records for criminal investigation.
At 6:47, federal agents executed search warrants at Kingsley headquarters, the Arden townhouse, and two foundation offices.
At 7:00, a nurse came to prepare Lily for surgery.
Sarah would have traded all three victories to make the fourth thing disappear.
Lily wore a pale hospital gown and yellow socks.
Her hair had been washed the night before and braided loosely.
She looked heartbreakingly ordinary.
Felix sat on the floor beside the bed because Lily had decided chairs were too formal for people who were scared.
Sarah sat on the other side.
No one mentioned the news.
No one mentioned the merger.
No one mentioned that Celeste's title as interim executive chair had been suspended by an emergency board committee at dawn.
Lily was drawing three stick figures on a piece of paper.
One had long hair.
One had very tall legs.
One was tiny and wore a crown.
Felix pointed.
"Why am I so tall?"
"Because you're rich."
Sarah covered her mouth.
Felix blinked.
"Those things are not connected."
Lily looked skeptical.
"In cartoons they are."
"Cartoons have misled you."
"Mom says magazines do that too."
Felix looked at Sarah.
"Your curriculum is aggressive."
Sarah smiled for half a second.
Then the preoperative nurse entered.
The smile vanished.
"We need to start getting ready."
Lily's crayon stopped moving.
"Now?"
"In a little while."
The nurse crouched to Lily's level.
"First we put on a bracelet and check some things."
Lily looked at Sarah.
"Can Mom come?"
"For part of it."
"Dad too?"
The nurse looked at Felix.
"We can make room."
Felix swallowed.
"Thank you."
Sarah's phone vibrated.
Detective Ruiz.
She ignored it.
It vibrated again.
Felix looked at her.
"Answer."
"No."
"It might matter."
"Nothing matters more than this."
Lily looked between them.
"You can answer."
Sarah smiled faintly.
"Bossy."
"You said I get it from you."
Sarah answered.
Ruiz's voice was urgent but controlled.
"We found Celeste."
Sarah looked at Felix.
"Where?"
"Teterboro Airport."
"Was she leaving?"
"A charter flight to Montreal was scheduled."
Felix's face hardened.
"Did you arrest her?"
"She is being detained while warrants are executed."
Sarah looked at Lily.
The child had returned to her drawing.
"Did you find anything?"
Ruiz paused.
"Enough that I wanted you to hear it from me before the media turns it into a circus."
"What?"
"The Arden townhouse contained hard copies of Lily's school records, Sarah's medical history, the forged psychiatric evaluation, and the original Marlowe Reactivation Plan."
Felix closed his eyes.
"Celeste's fingerprints?"
"We are processing everything."
"Anything tying her to the hospital?"
"A payment ledger includes Eric Daines and Martin Sloane."
Sarah's breath caught.
"Sloane said Graham hired him."
"Both may be true."
"Explain."
"Graham hired Sloane six weeks ago to investigate legacy access."
Ruiz continued.
"Celeste appears to have paid Sloane separately years earlier for information from the original Kingsley surveillance network."
Felix's jaw tightened.
"And the rabbit?"
"We found messages between Daines and an encrypted account discussing a replacement item and a timed delivery."
"Celeste's account?"
"Not proven yet."
Sarah almost laughed.
"You really hate giving me the last inch."
"The last inch is where cases survive court."
Sarah knew she was right.
Ruiz continued.
"There is also evidence someone photographed Lily from inside the hospital."
Sarah felt sick again.
"Who?"
"Daines."
"How did he get in after security tightened?"
"The fake transport order."
Felix looked at the ceiling.
Every loop kept closing back into another system credential.
"And the threatening calls?"
"We are tracing them."
Sarah lowered her voice.
"Did Celeste admit anything?"
"No."
"Of course not."
"Her attorney says she will cooperate after reviewing the warrants."
Felix laughed bitterly.
"Celeste has never cooperated with anything she could control."
Ruiz's voice softened.
"How is Lily?"
Sarah looked at her daughter.
"Scared."
"And you?"
"More scared."
"Then I will let you go."
Sarah ended the call.
Felix stared at his hands.
"She is in custody."
"For now."
"The court threw out the petition."
"Yes."
"The board suspended her."
"Yes."
Sarah looked at him.
"Why doesn't it feel like we won?"
Felix looked at Lily.
"Because the thing we care about is still in a hospital bed."
At 7:32, a phlebotomist came for blood.
Lily cried before the needle touched her.
Sarah held her.
Felix let Lily crush two of his fingers with her free hand.
"You can squeeze harder."
"I am."
"Oh."
Lily almost laughed through tears.
Afterward, Felix showed her the marks on his fingers as though she had accomplished something important.
"See?"
"I am strong."
"Terrifying."
At 8:00, Odette arrived.
She stopped at the doorway.
Sarah had not told her to come.
Felix had not either.
The older woman held a small paper bag.
"I can leave."
Sarah looked at Lily.
Lily looked at Odette.
"Who are you?"
Odette's face changed.
Felix stood slowly.
"Lily, this is my mother."
Lily frowned.
"My grandma?"
Odette's eyes filled instantly.
Sarah watched the woman who had treated a grandchild like a succession risk become unable to answer a six-year-old's simple question.
Felix did not rescue her.
Odette finally nodded.
"If you want me to be."
Lily considered her.
"Did you make Mom mad too?"
Felix looked away.
Sarah almost laughed.
Odette gave a small, sad smile.
"Very."
"Then you should say sorry."
Felix coughed again.
Odette looked at Sarah.
"Your child has a consistent theory of conflict resolution."
"It is surprisingly effective."
Odette stepped into the room.
"Sarah."
Her voice was quiet.
"I am sorry."
Sarah felt the old anger rise.
"For what part?"
Odette did not look away.
"For deciding your pregnancy was a risk before I allowed myself to see it as a life."
Felix went still.
Odette continued.
"For blocking your calls."
"For sending your letters to Thomas."
"For letting him negotiate your departure under conditions I knew were unfair."
Sarah's throat tightened.
"For believing I could postpone the truth until it became harmless."
Odette looked at Lily.
"Truth does not become harmless when it is delayed."
Sarah said nothing.
Odette held out the paper bag.
"I brought something that belonged to Felix when he was six."
Lily looked interested despite herself.
Inside was a small stuffed lion with one ear repaired by hand.
Felix stared.
"You kept Leo?"
Odette almost smiled.
"Your father kept everything."
Felix took the lion.
A memory moved across his face.
"Dad stitched the ear."
"Badly."
"He said the scar gave it character."
Odette handed it to Lily.
"You do not have to keep it."
Lily hugged the lion.
"I like scars."
Every adult in the room went quiet.
Lily looked down at her own chest as if imagining the future incision.
Sarah felt tears spill.
Lily looked up.
"Does mine get character too?"
Sarah knelt beside her.
"More than enough."
At 8:26, the surgeon arrived to review consent.
Sarah signed.
This signature felt different from every other signature in the story.
No hidden clauses.
No leverage.
No corporation.
Only risk, love, and a decision no one else could make for her.
Felix asked questions until the surgeon had answered every one.
Then he stopped.
"Thank you."
The surgeon looked at him.
"We will take good care of her."
At 8:41, hospital security entered with Detective Ruiz.
Ruiz looked uncomfortable.
"I am sorry to do this now."
Sarah's heart tightened.
"What?"
"Celeste has asked to speak with Felix."
Felix's face hardened.
"No."
"Her attorney says she will provide the encryption key to the remaining Arden archive if you speak with her for five minutes."
Odette swore quietly.
Sarah looked at Felix.
"Do you need the archive?"
Ruiz answered.
"It may contain proof of who authorized the second hospital event."
Felix stared at the clock.
Nineteen minutes until Lily was taken downstairs.
"Five minutes."
Sarah looked at him.
"Go."
"I am not leaving the floor."
"Video call."
Ruiz set up a secure connection in the consultation room.
Celeste appeared on the screen from an interview room at Teterboro.
She no longer looked polished.
Her hair was loose.
Her makeup had faded.
For the first time, Sarah saw the person beneath the strategy.
She looked frightened.
Felix did not sit.
"You have five minutes."
Celeste looked at him.
"You gave away your shares."
"Yes."
"Do you understand what you did?"
"Yes."
"You destroyed your leverage."
"That was the idea."
Her eyes flashed.
"For a child you met two days ago."
Felix's voice stayed quiet.
"For my daughter."
Celeste laughed once.
"You say that like biology erases six years."
"It doesn't."
"Then why throw away everything?"
"Because everything was being used to hurt her."
Celeste's face tightened.
"I never wanted her dead."
The room went still.
Detective Ruiz leaned forward.
Felix did not move.
"What did you want?"
Celeste realized too late what she had said.
Her attorney whispered off-screen.
She ignored him.
"I wanted Sarah discredited."
Sarah's hands went cold.
Felix's expression did not change.
"By using Lily."
"By proving Sarah could not manage Lily's health."
"You altered medical records."
Celeste's attorney interrupted.
"Do not answer that."
Celeste's eyes stayed on Felix.
"You were supposed to see Sarah as a threat."
"I did for about ten minutes."
"Your mother spent seven years teaching you to."
Odette flinched behind him.
Felix's voice hardened.
"Did you cause Lily's reaction at school?"
Celeste looked away.
"I did not touch her."
"That is not what I asked."
"I did not touch her."
"Did you instruct someone to change her emergency plan?"
Her attorney said her name sharply.
Celeste closed her mouth.
Felix took one step closer to the screen.
"Did you authorize the rabbit?"
For the first time, Celeste looked genuinely horrified.
"No."
Felix paused.
The answer sounded different.
"Did you know about it?"
"No."
"Then who did?"
Celeste looked toward her attorney.
He shook his head.
She looked back at Felix.
"Graham started using Sloane."
"We know."
"Sloane was not loyal to Graham."
"We know he worked for your father."
"He worked for whoever paid him."
"Did you pay him?"
Celeste said nothing.
Felix's jaw tightened.
"Encryption key."
Her attorney intervened.
"My client will provide the key after a written immunity discussion."
Felix laughed.
"Then this conversation is over."
Celeste leaned toward the camera.
"Wait."
Felix stopped.
Her voice dropped.
"The rabbit was not part of my plan."
Sarah entered the room.
"What was your plan?"
Celeste's face changed when she saw her.
Sarah stepped beside Felix.
"Say it."
Celeste looked at the table.
"A documented crisis at school."
Sarah's vision narrowed.
"You changed the medicine."
Celeste's attorney objected again.
Celeste continued anyway.
"It was supposed to make the existing symptoms look poorly managed."
Sarah's hands shook so violently that Felix reached toward her and stopped before touching her.
"My daughter could have died."
Celeste's face tightened.
"I was told the replacement would not be dangerous."
"By who?"
Silence.
"By who?"
Celeste looked at Felix.
"Thomas's old medical consultant."
"Dr. Lasker?"
She nodded.
Ruiz made a note.
Sarah's voice broke.
"You used a six-year-old child's body to create evidence."
Celeste looked at her.
"You came back three days before closing."
Sarah almost could not process the answer.
"That is your explanation?"
"You do not understand what would have happened if the merger failed."
Sarah laughed through tears.
"There it is again."
Felix looked at Celeste.
"The company."
Celeste's face hardened.
"You loved it too."
"I did."
"You would have done the same thing five years ago."
Felix stared at her.
Then he answered with devastating calm.
"Maybe."
Sarah looked at him.
He did not hide from the truth.
"That is why I gave it up."
Celeste's expression finally broke.
The screen went black as her attorney ended the call.
Ruiz received the encryption key twenty minutes later through counsel.
Celeste wanted a negotiation badly enough to surrender the first piece.
But by then Lily was being wheeled toward surgery.
Sarah walked beside the bed until the red line on the floor where families had to stop.
Lily began to cry.
"Mom."
Sarah bent over her.
"I am right here."
"Don't go."
"I have to stop here."
Lily reached toward Felix.
He stepped close.
"Dad."
"Yeah, kiddo."
"Promise you'll be here."
His eyes filled.
"I promise."
"Even if it takes forever?"
"Especially then."
The orderly began moving the bed.
Sarah walked until her fingers slipped from Lily's hand.
Felix stood beside her.
