CHAPTER 30 — THE CHILDREN WHO WERE WAITING

Every screen showed a child looking directly into a camera.

Ninety-five children.

Ninety-five locations.

Ninety-five Nightingale subjects raised inside the systems controlling the country.

Mara searched the feeds.

“They are live.”

Wren slowly stood.

Her eyes had changed.

The fear was gone.

“Wren?” Evelyn asked.

The girl smiled.

“My activation name is Sparrow.”

Helena looked proud.

“Sparrow was designed to wake the others.”

Alexander aimed his weapon at Wren.

Evelyn stepped in front of her.

“She is a child.”

“She is a trigger.”

“So was I.”

“And look what they made you.”

Evelyn held his gaze.

“They failed.”

Wren began speaking numbers.

Across the screens, each child repeated them.

Computers activated in hospitals, banks, military offices, and court buildings.

Mara tried to interrupt the signal.

“I can’t stop it. The children are using local systems.”

“What are they doing?” Julian asked.

Daniel answered.

“They’re opening the Witness Archive.”

Helena’s pride vanished.

“That archive was sealed.”

Alexander looked at Evelyn.

“What is inside it?”

She remembered the hidden drive beneath her shoulder.

“Every crime Nightingale ever recorded.”

Celeste’s face went pale.

“Not only the Choir.”

Gabriel whispered, “All of us.”

Documents began appearing online.

Daniel’s experiments.

Celeste’s orders.

Beatrice’s financial crimes.

Gabriel’s conditioning records.

Julian’s abuse.

Nathan’s covert operations.

Helena’s original designs.

Alexander’s executions.

And Evelyn’s missing-year confession.

The world was about to learn everything.

Helena rushed toward the controls.

A shot stopped her.

No one knew who had fired.

She fell, wounded but alive.

The facility shook as the archive spread across the globe.

Alexander’s soldiers received new orders through their earpieces.

Some lowered their weapons.

Others aimed at him.

Nightingale was no longer controlled by one person.

It was turning everyone against everyone.

Wren stopped speaking.

The screens went black.

Then one final video appeared.

Daniel Vance stood alone in a room.

The timestamp showed that it had been recorded one hour in the future.

Evelyn stared at the impossible date.

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“Evelyn, if you are watching this, then the Witness Archive has opened.”

He glanced over his shoulder as though someone were approaching.

“You must listen carefully. Alexander is not your father.”

Alexander’s face hardened.

Daniel continued.

“Beatrice’s daughter died the night she was born.”

Evelyn felt the room fall away beneath her.

“The infant Daniel took from the hospital was not Evelyn Vance,” the recording said.

Beatrice whispered, “No.”

Daniel looked terrified.

“The real Evelyn is still alive.”

A photograph appeared.

It showed two teenage girls with identical faces.

Evelyn recognized herself.

But she had never seen the girl standing beside her.

The screen displayed two names.

SUBJECT ONE: EVELYN VANCE

SUBJECT ZERO: IDENTITY UNKNOWN

Evelyn touched the scar on her shoulder.

The hidden drive beneath it began vibrating.

Mara checked her monitor.

“Someone is trying to connect to the drive.”

“Who?”

A new message appeared.

HELLO, SISTER.

Before Evelyn could respond, the mountain facility lost power.

Complete darkness swallowed the room.

A woman’s voice came from somewhere behind Evelyn.

Her own voice.

“You have been living my life long enough.”

A hand touched Evelyn’s wounded shoulder.

Then the emergency lights returned.

Wren was gone.

Helena was gone.

The doors stood open.

May you like

And written across the glass in blood were six words:

ONLY ONE EVELYN CAN SURVIVE NIGHTINGALE.
