CHAPTER 5 — JULIAN’S REVENGE

By sunrise, Evelyn’s face was on every news channel in the country.

The headlines were brutal.

Julian stood before the cameras with a dark bruise along his jaw.

He wore no tie.

His voice was soft.

Controlled.

Convincing.

“My wife has struggled privately for some time. My family protected her because we loved her. Last night, she became violent.”

Beside him, Beatrice lowered her eyes as though fighting tears.

“We only want Evelyn to receive help,” she said.

Within an hour, Julian had frozen every public account connected to Evelyn’s name.

By noon, three former employees had accused her of intimidation.

By afternoon, a doctor claimed she had suffered a psychological breakdown.

Every lie was perfectly timed.

Every witness had been prepared in advance.

Evelyn watched from the underground terminal.

“He planned this years ago,” Mara said.

“No,” Evelyn replied. “His mother did.”

Gabriel entered carrying a small television remote.

“You need to respond before the story becomes permanent.”

“I will.”

Evelyn connected a drive to the broadcast system.

At exactly six o’clock, every major news station received the same video.

It showed Julian and the director of the Thorne Children’s Foundation sitting in a private office.

Julian laughed as they discussed moving forty million dollars from medical grants into an offshore account.

The video ended with Julian raising a glass.

“To sick children,” he joked. “The most profitable business in America.”

The public reaction was immediate.

Sponsors withdrew.

Board members resigned.

Protesters gathered outside Thorne headquarters.

The company’s stock began to fall.

Julian watched the leak from his penthouse office.

His hand tightened around a glass.

“She has more,” Beatrice said.

“How much more?”

“All of it.”

Julian turned toward his mother.

“You said she never found the hidden network.”

“I was wrong.”

A security alert appeared on his phone.

Someone had entered the family’s abandoned clinic outside the city.

Julian stared at the name attached to the access code.

EVELYN VANCE

Beatrice grabbed his wrist.

“She cannot reach Room Seventeen.”

“Why?”

May you like

Beatrice looked toward the dark window.

“Because the woman inside knows who Evelyn really is.”
