CHAPTER 3 — THE ROSE ARCH BREAKS

The guests sensed it before they understood it.

Something was wrong.

The groom was not coming.

Vanessa’s smile tightened slightly as she stood alone beneath the roses.

“Daniel?” she called softly.

No answer.

Only silence from the estate house.

Then Daniel appeared at the edge of the garden.

Holding Ellie.

Every conversation around the guests slowly died.

One by one.

Until only wind remained.

Vanessa’s eyes flickered downward to Ellie.

Just for a second.

Something unreadable passed through her face.

Then it disappeared.

“Where were you?” Vanessa asked gently, almost rehearsed.

Daniel stopped.

His voice was quiet.

“Locked in a bathroom.”

A ripple moved through the crowd.

Vanessa blinked once.

Then smiled again.

“That must be a misunderstanding.”

Ellie flinched slightly at her voice.

Daniel felt it.

And everything in him hardened.

“No misunderstanding,” he said.

A pause.

Then he continued.

“She told my daughter there isn’t room for two girls in my heart.”

The garden went still.

Even the music stopped.

Vanessa’s expression finally cracked—not fear.

Control.

“Daniel, she’s a child. She—”

“She is my daughter.”

The words cut through the air.

Sharp.

Final.

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“She’s replacing me in your life. I was only trying to—”

Daniel stepped forward one step.

Not loud.

Not angry.

Certain.

“You tried to erase her.”

Silence.

No response.

Only breath.

Only watching guests.

Only truth hanging in the air too heavy to deny.

Then Daniel turned slightly, speaking to the planner without looking away from Vanessa.

“Cancel everything.”

A gasp moved through the crowd.

Vanessa’s voice broke its calm for the first time.

“You’re humiliating me in front of everyone.”

Daniel looked at her now.

Truly looked.

And for the first time saw something behind the perfection.

Not love.

Not care.

Control.

“I’m protecting my daughter,” he said.

May you like

Then he turned away.

And walked out of the wedding forever.
