CHAPTER 4 — AFTER THE GLASS SHATTERS

The estate felt different after the guests left.

Empty chairs.

Falling petals.

Champagne still untouched.

Like a dream collapsing slowly into reality.

Ellie had fallen asleep in Daniel’s arms inside the house.

Safe now.

Breathing evenly.

For the first time that night, peace existed.

Ryan stood near the window, watching the garden.

“She’s not going to accept this quietly,” he said.

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

He was still holding Ellie.

Still grounding himself in the fact she was real.

“She doesn’t need to,” Daniel finally said.

A pause.

Then softer:

“I already chose.”

Outside, Vanessa stood alone near the rose arch.

Still in her wedding dress.

Still perfect.

But now there was no audience left to admire it.

Only silence.

Only consequences.

She removed her veil slowly.

Not crying.

Not shaking.

Just thinking.

And somewhere beneath that calm expression…

Something darker formed.

Daniel closed the curtains.

Turned off the lights.

And sat beside his daughter’s bed as she slept.

For the first time in years, he wasn’t thinking about loss.

Or love.

Or weddings.

Only one truth remained.

Some promises don’t end at the altar.

They begin there.
