Chapter 2: The Bruises No One Had Questioned

At the hospital, the doctors examined Emma for nearly three hours.
She had a fractured cheekbone, a mild concussion, and severe bruising along her shoulder where she had struck the floor.
The orthopedic specialist was more concerned about her hip.
Because of Emma’s muscle disorder, even a fall that looked minor could cause lasting damage.
I stood outside the examination room while Emily sat in a plastic chair with her face buried in her hands.
“I should have moved,” she whispered.
I didn’t pretend not to understand.
“At the table?”
She nodded.
“When he hit her, I became fifteen again.”
Emily had told me pieces of her childhood over the years.
Victoria’s punishments.
Brandon’s temper.
The locked bedroom doors.
The constant reminder that Harper money could provide comfort or take it away.
But Emily had always softened the details.
That night, she finally stopped protecting them.
“Brandon used to shove me down the stairs,” she said. “He would pull my hair when Mom wasn’t looking.”
Then she laughed bitterly.
“Except she was always looking.”
I sat beside her.
“She knew?”
“She said it would make me stronger.”
The words settled between us like ash.
Emily stared through the small glass window in the hospital door.
“When Emma was born, Mom offered to pay for everything. Specialists. Therapy. Equipment. But there were conditions.”
“What conditions?”
“She wanted access to Emma’s medical files. Control over the trust. Control over us.”
I felt cold.
“You told me the money came from your inheritance.”
“It did. But Mom managed the accounts.”
Before I could respond, Daniel approached us with a folder.
His expression told me the night had become bigger than one assault.
“We checked Brandon’s record,” he said. “There are three previous complaints.”
Emily looked up.
“Complaints from who?”
“Two former employees and one ex-girlfriend.”
“What happened?”
“All three withdrew their statements.”
Emily gave a hollow smile.
“My mother.”
Daniel did not disagree.
Then he placed a printed photograph on the chair beside us.
It showed Brandon outside a private clinic, standing beside a man I recognized from Victoria’s charity foundation.
“Do you know him?” Daniel asked.
“Dr. Wallace,” Emily said. “He oversees Emma’s treatment fund.”
Daniel’s gaze sharpened.
“We have reason to believe the medical trust has been making payments to companies connected to Brandon.”
I looked at him.
“You think he stole from Emma?”
“I think someone did.”
The door to the examination room opened before I could answer.
The doctor stepped out.
“Emma is stable,” she said. “But she’ll need observation overnight.”
Relief nearly dropped me to my knees.
Then the doctor’s expression became more serious.
“There’s something else.”
She showed us a set of scan results.
“Some of the bruising on Emma’s arms appears older than tonight. That’s expected with her condition. But several marks are consistent with forceful gripping.”
Emily stopped breathing.
I felt my body go rigid.
“Who has been handling her?” the doctor asked.
Emily’s eyes filled with horror.
“My mother’s private nurse.”

At that moment, the story stopped being about what Brandon had done at dinner.
It became about what had been happening when we weren’t there.
