Victoria’s attorneys moved quickly.
They released a statement claiming Brandon had attempted to prevent Emma from falling.
They described the recording as “misleading.”
They called the investigation a family dispute fueled by financial resentment.
By the end of the week, local news stations were camped outside our home.
Brandon was released on bond.
He appeared before the cameras in a navy suit and spoke about forgiveness.
“I love my niece,” he said. “I regret that a private moment has been twisted into something ugly.”
Emma saw the clip from her hospital bed.
She looked at me.
“He said he loves me.”
I turned off the television.
“Some people use that word when they want to escape responsibility.”
“Is he coming back?”
“No.”
I said it with more confidence than I felt.
That night, someone threw a brick through our kitchen window.
A note was wrapped around it.

Police placed a patrol car outside the house.
Daniel believed Brandon’s business associates were trying to frighten us.
Emily believed it was her mother.
Neither answer made me feel safer.
Two days later, Emily received a message from an unknown number.
It contained a photograph of Emma’s medical file.
Beneath it were six words:

Wheelchair replacements that never existed.
Specialized therapy appointments Emma had never attended.
Medical transportation on days she had been home with us.
Every invoice carried Dr. Wallace’s approval.
When investigators questioned him, he tried to protect Victoria.
For six hours.
Then they showed him the financial records.
He accepted a cooperation agreement before midnight.
According to Dr. Wallace, Victoria had designed the scheme.
She used Emma’s condition to move money through charitable and medical accounts while maintaining public sympathy.
Brandon received the funds.
Helen kept Emma obedient.
And Emily remained silent because she believed her daughter’s survival depended on Victoria’s generosity.
It was not generosity.
It was a cage.
Daniel came to our house the following morning.
“We have enough to charge Victoria,” he said.
Emily closed her eyes.
I took her hand.
Daniel continued.
“But the strongest witness is you.”
Emily looked toward the living room, where Emma was drawing from her wheelchair.
“What would I have to say?”
“The truth.”
Emily watched our daughter for a long time.
Then she nodded.
