CHAP 13 — THE FINAL TRAP

For one second, Evelyn believed she was imagining him.
Adrian looked thinner.
A bruise darkened the side of his face.
But the smile was the same.
Calm.
Confident.
Certain that every room eventually belonged to him.
“You look surprised,” he said.
“You were transferred this morning.”
“Yes.”
Evelyn understood.
The Covenant still had people inside law enforcement.
The transfer had been arranged.
The guards had been paid or threatened.
Adrian had escaped before reaching the federal detention center.
Helena looked at her son with annoyance.
“You were told to remain outside.”
“I wanted to see her.”
“This is not personal.”
Adrian laughed.
“It has always been personal.”
He approached Evelyn.
She did not step back.
“That’s what you never understood,” she said. “You thought controlling someone made you important.”
His smile disappeared.
“Sign the documents.”
“And then what?”
“We leave the country.”
“With Caroline?”
Helena answered.
“Caroline has been a problem for too long.”
Adrian looked at the marks still visible on Evelyn’s wrist.
“You should have listened to me. We could have had everything.”
“We?”
“You would have had the house. The name. The life.”
“I had a prison.”
“You had protection.”
Evelyn almost laughed.
Adrian still believed that comfort could erase terror.
That expensive rooms changed the meaning of locked doors.
Helena pushed the papers closer.
“Sign.”
Evelyn picked up the pen.
Outside, agents waited for the signal.
But the building’s thick walls blocked the transmitter.
The team could hear only fragments.
Evelyn needed time.
“My mother created the trust,” she said. “You knew her.”
Helena’s expression changed slightly.
“Katherine was intelligent.”
“More intelligent than you?”
“She was emotional.”
“That is what frightened you.”
Helena’s eyes narrowed.
Evelyn continued.
“My mother found evidence against the Covenant. You couldn’t discredit her, so you killed her.”
Victor’s voice suddenly came through the building’s old speaker system.
“She’s right.”
Everyone turned.
Victor stepped into the lobby.
He was alone.
Helena raised her weapon.
“I told you not to involve yourself.”
Victor looked at Evelyn.
“I’m sorry.”
“For coming?”
“For waiting twenty years.”
He removed a folder from inside his coat.
“I have the original Covenant records.”
Helena stared at it.
Victor had discovered the documents inside an old Harlan vault.
They contained signatures proving Helena’s involvement in Katherine’s death and Caroline’s confinement.
“Give them to me,” Helena said.
“Release Caroline and Evelyn.”
“You still think you can negotiate.”
“No.”
Victor dropped the folder into a metal trash container.
Then he struck a match.
Helena moved forward.
Victor let the match fall.
Flames spread across the papers.
Adrian aimed at him.
“Stop!”
Victor smiled without humor.
“They’re copies.”
Helena’s face transformed.
For the first time, her control broke.
“Where are the originals?”
“Already delivered to federal prosecutors.”
A siren sounded outside.
The task force had received Victor’s signal.
Adrian grabbed Evelyn and pulled her against him.
The weapon pressed against her side.
Helena moved toward the rear exit.
Caroline struggled against the ropes.
“Evelyn!”
Adrian dragged Evelyn toward the staircase.
“Tell them to stay back!”
Agents entered the front lobby.
Victor raised his hands.
“Don’t shoot!”
Adrian pulled Evelyn upstairs.
They reached the old dormitory floor where the shelter once housed women and children.
Paint peeled from the walls.
Broken beds lined the rooms.
“You always ruin everything,” Adrian said.
“No. I finally stopped protecting it.”
“You think these people care about you? When the trial ends, they’ll move on.”
“Maybe.”
“You’ll always be damaged.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“That is what you need to believe.”
He tightened his grip.
“You are nothing without me.”
“No, Adrian.”
Her voice remained calm.
“I became nothing because of you. Then I built myself again.”
She drove her heel down onto his foot.
Adrian loosened his grip.
Evelyn twisted away.
The weapon fired.
The shot struck the ceiling.
She ran into the nearest room and slammed the door.
Adrian struck it from outside.
“You can’t hide from me!”
Evelyn looked around.
There was no second exit.
Only a broken window overlooking the courtyard.
The door began to splinter.
She grabbed a metal bed frame and pushed it against the entrance.
It would not hold long.
Below the window, agents moved through the courtyard.
But Adrian reached the room before they saw her.
The door burst open.
He crossed the room and struck Evelyn to the floor.
“You should have signed.”
Blood filled her mouth.
Adrian raised the weapon.
Then another voice spoke behind him.
“No.”
Caroline stood in the doorway.
She had freed one hand and followed them upstairs.
In her grip was the broken leg of a wooden chair.
Adrian turned.
Caroline struck his wrist.
The weapon fell near the window.
Evelyn kicked it away.
Adrian grabbed Caroline by the throat.
Evelyn drove the metal bed rail into his back.
He released Caroline and stumbled toward the broken window.
For a moment, he balanced at the edge.
Evelyn could have pushed him.
Adrian saw the possibility in her face.
“Do it,” he whispered. “Prove you’re like me.”
Evelyn lowered the metal rail.
“No.”
Agents entered the room.
Adrian lunged for the fallen weapon.
A federal officer fired.
The bullet struck Adrian’s shoulder.
He collapsed.
Alive.
Disarmed.
Defeated.
Downstairs, Helena reached the rear exit.
Victor blocked her path.
“You destroyed both our families,” he said.
Helena looked at him coldly.
“Families destroy themselves. I only teach them how.”
She raised her weapon.
Before she could fire, Leah Morrison stepped from behind the door and sprayed a fire extinguisher into Helena’s face.
Helena cried out.
Victor knocked the weapon from her hand.
Agents surrounded her.
As Helena was placed in handcuffs, she looked toward Evelyn descending the stairs.
“You think this ends because I’m arrested?”
Evelyn stood beside Caroline.
“No.”
Helena smiled.
“Then you understand.”
“Yes,” Evelyn replied. “It ends because people finally know your name.”
Outside, cameras recorded Helena Vale being taken into federal custody.
Adrian was carried toward an ambulance in restraints.
The Covenant had survived for decades through silence.
By sunrise, silence was no longer possible.
But when Evelyn believed the danger had passed, an agent approached her with a sealed evidence bag.
Inside was a handwritten list recovered from Helena’s coat.
At the top was Evelyn’s name.
Below it were the names of sixteen women.

The final name belonged to someone Evelyn knew.
Someone still living inside the Vale mansion.
