CHAPTER 25 — INSIDE GABRIEL
The recording ended immediately after the sentence.
There was no explanation.
No second tape.
No image of the person asking questions.
Gabriel looked physically ill.
“What did she mean?” Evelyn asked.
“I don’t know.”
Investigators scanned him for implanted devices.
The initial examination showed nothing unusual.
Then a medical specialist noticed an old surgical scar beneath his left shoulder blade.
Gabriel said he had always believed it came from a childhood accident.
An X-ray revealed a thin metallic object embedded near the bone.
It was removed under local anesthesia.
The object was not a tracking device.
It was a sealed data capsule.
Inside was a strip of microfilm.
Caroline arranged for specialized equipment to read it.
The film contained photographs of handwritten pages.
Names.
Property transfers.
Political appointments.
Concealed births.
At the top of every page appeared the symbol of the Ninth Covenant.
“The Registry,” Leah whispered.
“Part of it,” Gabriel replied.
Several pages had been removed before the film was created.
The surviving entries showed a pattern.
Children born into wealthy families had been reassigned, adopted under false identities, or declared dead.
Some later became judges, executives, doctors, and elected officials.
They did not know they were connected.
Or that their inheritances had been engineered decades before they received them.
At the final page was a section titled SUCCESSION CANDIDATES.
Most names had been crossed out.
Three remained.
GABRIEL HARLAN.
EVELYN HARLAN VALE.
SUBJECT NINE.
“Who is Subject Nine?” Victor asked.
No one knew.
Gabriel examined the dates.
“These records were created before I was born.”
“Then the Covenant predicted your birth?” Caroline asked.
“No,” Mara said.
“They arranged it.”
Victor looked toward Gabriel.
“You are not my son.”
Gabriel met his eyes.
“I never claimed to be.”
The room fell silent.
Evelyn returned to the altered birth certificate.
The father’s name had been covered.
Laboratory analysis removed part of the newer ink without destroying the original writing beneath it.
Only the first letter became visible.

Adrian’s father had been named Arthur Vale.
Victor stared at the document.
“Katherine would never—”
“This may not have been her choice,” Evelyn said.
Mara began crying quietly.
She explained that the Covenant selected women from specific family lines.
They manipulated marriages, medical treatment, and pregnancies to produce heirs who could claim multiple fortunes.
Gabriel was not merely Katherine’s hidden son.
He might also have been a Vale before Evelyn married Adrian.
A guard entered carrying a phone.
The prison had called.
Adrian Vale had been scheduled for transfer that afternoon.
But the transport vehicle had never reached the receiving facility.
It had been found abandoned beside the highway.
The driver and two officers were unconscious.
Adrian was gone.
