Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN IN THE GRAVE.

The first bullet struck the ladder above Dominic’s head.

Stone fragments rained into the chamber.

Ruiz pulled him behind a row of file cabinets while her agents fired upward through the coffin shaft.

Mia’s scream ended in a burst of gunfire.

Then the crypt went silent.

Dominic seized Ruiz’s radio.

“Daniel, report.”

Static answered.

He tried again.

“Daniel.”

A weak voice came through.

“Harper is safe.”

Daniel sounded breathless.

“Two attackers came through the memorial wall.”

“One escaped into the grave tunnel.”

“Mia?”

“She was hit.”

Dominic stopped breathing.

Rowan’s voice replaced Daniel’s.

“Grazed across the upper arm.”

“She is conscious.”

“She is asking for you.”

Relief lasted less than a second.

“Seal the crypt.”

“The attacker who escaped may be heading toward Isabella’s grave.”

Ruiz took back the radio.

“All exterior teams converge on the family cemetery.”

“No weapons discharge unless the target is confirmed.”

The hidden chamber lights dimmed.

The old film projector began turning by itself.

A countdown appeared on the wall.

10:00.

Dominic looked at Ruiz.

“Another release?”

“Or a destruction sequence.”

The projector displayed grainy footage.

Dominic’s father sat behind the same desk where the black telephone rested.

He looked older than Dominic remembered, his face swollen from illness and his hands trembling.

“If the chamber is opened without both ciphers, the physical archive will burn.”

His recorded voice echoed from hidden speakers.

“The second ledger is only an index.”

“The proof is stored behind the grave door.”

“Silver remembers.”

“Black permits.”

“Blood confirms.”

The image changed.

A diagram of the cemetery appeared.

Beneath Isabella’s grave was a second chamber connected to the one beneath the coffin.

The two bird keys had to be inserted at opposite ends within sixty seconds.

Mia’s blood was required at the grave lock.

Nathan’s voice came through the shaft.

“Dominic.”

He appeared above with the black bird in one hand.

Claire stood beside him holding the silver bird.

Mia leaned against Rowan, a fresh bandage wrapped around her arm.

Harper clung to her uninjured side.

Ruiz looked up.

“How did the attackers enter?”

Claire pointed toward the moved memorial.

“A passage behind the wall.”

“It leads to the cemetery.”

Dominic climbed back into the crypt.

He reached Mia first.

“Let me see.”

“It did not hit bone.”

Her voice shook despite the words.

“Harper was behind me.”

Dominic looked at the child.

Harper’s face was pressed against Mia’s dress.

She was not crying.

That frightened him more.

He crouched.

“Harper.”

She looked at him.

“Is Mommy going missing again?”

“No.”

Dominic touched the red coat now sealed inside an evidence bag across the room.

“No one is taking her.”

Mia held out her bandaged arm.

“The lock needs my blood.”

“You have given enough.”

“If we do not open the archive, Celeste will keep hunting us.”

Mia’s eyes did not leave his.

“She will keep hunting Harper.”

Claire knelt beside them.

“My mother knows the grave route.”

“The attacker may already be inside the second chamber.”

Nathan attempted to stand from his wheelchair.

Rowan pushed him back.

“You will die if you tear that wound open again.”

Nathan looked at Dominic.

“Then do not waste the time I have left arguing with a doctor.”

The countdown reached 7:48.

Ruiz divided the team.

She would accompany Mia and Claire through the grave tunnel with the silver key.

Dominic, Nathan, and Daniel would remain beneath the coffin with the black key.

Harper would stay in the crypt under Rowan’s protection and six federal agents.

Harper refused immediately.

“No.”

Mia lowered herself despite the pain.

“You must stay here.”

“You promised you would not leave.”

“I am coming back.”

“That is what you said before.”

Mia closed her eyes.

Every decision required her to wound the child in order to save her.

Dominic took the folded paper bird from the evidence bag.

He placed it in Harper’s hand.

“This belongs to the person who tried to frighten you.”

Harper looked at the photograph hidden in its folds.

“I want you to keep it until we return.”

“Why?”

“Because the people beneath this house hide things.”

Dominic closed her fingers around the paper.

“But you find them.”

Harper studied him.

Then she nodded.

“I will count.”

“Count what?”

“Your footsteps when you come back.”

The teams separated.

Claire opened the memorial passage and guided Ruiz and Mia into a low stone tunnel.

Dominic descended beneath the coffin with Nathan and Daniel.

The countdown reached 6:12.

They moved through the archive room toward a black steel door marked with a bird-shaped slot.

A small screen displayed WAITING FOR SILVER.

Dominic inserted the black key but did not turn it.

Daniel connected Ruiz’s radio channel to a portable speaker.

Mia’s breathing came through first.

Then Claire’s voice.

“We reached the grave lock.”

The second chamber beneath Isabella’s grave was lined with white tile.

A glass coffin occupied its center.

The body inside had been removed.

Bloodstained medical restraints hung from the sides.

Ruiz photographed everything.

Mia approached a silver lock beside the coffin.

A needle extended from the panel.

Claire stopped her.

“My father designed blood readers to reject samples taken by force.”

“How would a machine know?” Ruiz asked.

“Pulse and pressure.”

“The person has to place a hand here willingly.”

Mia pressed her palm against the plate.

The needle entered her fingertip.

A red line traveled through the glass.

The screen changed.

ELEANOR SHAW DESCENDANT CONFIRMED.

Mia stared at the words.

Claire inserted the silver bird.

“Ready.”

Dominic turned the black key.

Claire turned silver.

Both steel doors opened.

The countdown stopped at 4:03.

Lights activated across the archive.

Rows of cabinets stretched beneath the cemetery and the crypt.

Servers hummed behind armored glass.

Photographs covered a central wall.

Dominic saw judges receiving cash, senators meeting criminals, agents passing files, and his father sitting beside Celeste Bennett.

There were photographs of Isabella too.

Isabella entering the ambulance after the explosion.

Isabella inside a hospital room with Celeste.

Isabella chained to a chair beneath the chapel.

Isabella bruised and thinner one year later.

Isabella standing alone in front of the river two years later.

Then the images changed.

In photographs dated three years earlier, Isabella was no longer restrained.

She sat at a conference table.

People listened while she spoke.

Nathan gripped the edge of a cabinet.

“No.”

Dominic moved closer.

A photograph showed Isabella wearing a black iron bird around her neck.

Celeste stood behind her.

They were not facing each other as jailer and prisoner.

They stood side by side.

Daniel opened the physical ledger index.

A section marked SUCCESSION contained three names.

CELESTE BENNETT — ARCHITECT.

ISABELLA VALE — CUSTODIAN.

H. CARTER — CONTINGENCY.

Dominic stared at the final line.

“Harper.”

Nathan looked sick.

“Wait until the child turns four.”

Daniel searched the adjacent file.

It contained Eleanor’s instructions.

If Eleanor died, the silver cipher would pass to Mia.

If Mia was compromised, access would pass to her first child after the child reached an age capable of independent memory.

Harper was not a financial heir.

She was a living witness key.

Eleanor had designed the system so a child could identify a sequence of pictures, sounds, and colors hidden inside a lullaby.

No password could be tortured from her because she did not know it was a password.

Mia heard through the radio.

“The song my mother sang.”

Claire remembered Celeste humming beneath the chapel.

“She was testing Harper.”

Dominic’s rage became almost silent.

Black Briar had waited until Harper turned four because her memory had become the final lock.

The black telephone rang again.

This time, screens across both chambers activated.

A live image appeared.

Snow moved past tall windows in an unknown house.

Celeste stood beside a fireplace.

Her face was calm despite the failed relay and the destroyed microdot.

Then another woman entered the frame.

Dominic forgot the room.

Isabella looked older.

Her hair was shorter and threaded with silver near the temples.

The scar on her cheek was deeper.

But she was alive.

She wore the gray coat from the photograph.

Mia whispered through the radio.

“That is the woman from the picture.”

Dominic stepped toward the screen.

“Isabella.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

For one heartbeat, the years between them disappeared.

Then she looked past the camera and controlled herself.

“Dominic, listen carefully.”

“Where are you?”

“There is no time.”

“There are federal agents in the archive.”

“I know.”

Ruiz looked sharply at the cameras.

Isabella continued.

“The evidence in those rooms can expose Black Briar.”

“It can also collapse governments, destroy witnesses, and start wars between organizations that do not understand they were manipulated.”

“Celeste will burn it before she lets you control it.”

Celeste smiled beside her.

Dominic raised the black key toward the screen.

“Then come home and help me stop her.”

Isabella’s face broke slightly at the word home.

“I cannot.”

“Cannot or will not?”

Nathan stepped into view.

“Isabella, I am sorry.”

She looked at him.

“You should be.”

Nathan lowered his head.

Dominic felt the old betrayal return.

“Did Nathan give you to Celeste?”

“Yes.”

“Did she hold you prisoner?”

“For years.”

Isabella looked at Celeste.

“Then I learned the only way out was through the center.”

Celeste touched Isabella’s shoulder.

The gesture looked almost affectionate.

Dominic’s voice turned cold.

“Are you working with her?”

Isabella looked directly into the camera.

“I am keeping something worse from replacing her.”

“What is worse?”

A warning alarm interrupted them.

Daniel checked the server wall.

“Temperature rising.”

Red lights spread across the archive.

A chemical burn system had activated inside the cabinets.

Ruiz ordered agents to remove the ledger and as many drives as possible.

Steel shutters began closing over the exits.

Celeste watched through the screen.

“You opened the archive.”

“Now you get to watch it erase itself.”

Mia seized the silver ledger section containing Harper’s contingency file.

Claire pulled a drive from the server rack.

Dominic grabbed the film reel and his father’s letter.

Smoke rolled from the cabinets.

Nathan found an emergency wheel beside the black door.

“It requires pressure from both sides.”

Mia reached the matching wheel near the grave lock.

Despite the blood running from her finger and the wound in her arm, she turned.

Nathan turned his.

The steel shutters stopped with only inches remaining.

Everyone crawled through.

Nathan’s wound opened completely.

He collapsed after Daniel dragged him into the coffin chamber.

Mia and Claire escaped through the grave tunnel with Ruiz.

The archive erupted behind them.

Fire consumed paper, film, photographs, and seventeen years of hidden crimes.

At the crypt entrance, Harper counted footsteps aloud.

“One.”

“Two.”

“Three.”

Mia emerged first.

Harper ran into her arms.

Dominic followed through the coffin shaft.

Harper saw him and continued counting until he reached the floor.

“Thirty-seven.”

“You came back.”

Dominic touched her hair.

“I promised.”

Dawn began turning the chapel windows gray.

Ruiz placed the recovered drive and ledger pages into evidence bags.

“The warrant against you is suspended pending review.”

“You are not free to leave the estate.”

Dominic nodded.

He did not care about freedom yet.

Mia and Harper were together.

Nathan was alive under Rowan’s hands.

Claire stood before her father’s memorial with no mother, no wedding, and no identity she could trust.

Daniel approached with the tablet recovered from the relay.

“One connection survived the fire.”

The screen lit.

Isabella appeared again.

This time, Celeste was not beside her.

Isabella stood alone before the tall windows.

She removed her wedding ring and placed it on a table.

“Dominic.”

Her voice was no longer frightened.

It carried the same calm authority that had once steadied him during the worst nights of his life.

“Celeste did not take me from that house.”

Dominic stared at her.

Isabella’s eyes moved toward something beyond the camera.

“I brought her back because Black Briar needs a war to reveal its real leader.”

Dominic felt the chapel grow colder.

“Who is the leader?”

Isabella looked at Mia.

Then at Harper.

Finally, she looked back at Dominic.

“You are.”

The connection ended.

Outside, federal sirens continued arriving.

Far beneath the burned archive, a final server awakened on emergency power.

A single message crossed its screen.

SUCCESSION PHASE TWO ACTIVATED.
