Chapter 2 - THE BRIDE IN THE DARK.

The scream came through the stone like a blade.
Dominic ran before the darkness had finished swallowing the passage.
He left Marcus with Nathan because there was no time to decide whether his oldest friend was a traitor, a liar, or both.
The only certainty was that Mia and Harper were upstairs.
And someone had just cut power to a mansion protected by three independent generators.
Dominic reached the hidden wine rack and forced it open.
Smoke rolled through the cellar.
Red emergency strobes flashed weakly along the floor, turning broken bottles into scattered pieces of blood-colored glass.
“Daniel!”
No answer.
Dominic climbed the iron stairs two at a time.
At the top, the basement hallway was empty.
A nurse lay unconscious beside the wall.
Her medical case had been opened and overturned.
Syringes glittered across the tile.
Dominic checked her pulse.
Alive.
A chemical smell clung to the cloth pressed near her mouth.
He followed drag marks toward the west sitting room.
The doors were closed.
Light leaked beneath them.
Not electric light.
Candlelight.
Dominic moved to the side and pushed one door open with the barrel of his gun.
The room had been transformed during his week away.
White roses covered the tables.
Silver ribbons hung from the ceiling.
Rows of chairs faced a temporary wedding arch.
Claire had planned a private rehearsal dinner there.
Now the flowers glowed like pale faces in the darkness.
Dr. Rowan knelt beside Mia’s stretcher.
One nurse pressed gauze to Daniel’s temple.
Harper crouched beneath a table, clutching Dominic’s coat.
And standing at the center of the room was Claire Bennett.
She wore a cream silk blouse, black trousers, and no shoes.
A thin line of blood ran down the side of her neck.
In her right hand, she held a kitchen knife.
In her left, she held a candle.
Dominic aimed at her.
“Put it down.”
Claire looked at him with wide, terrified eyes.
“Thank God.”
She dropped the knife immediately.
It struck the floor with a clean metallic note.
“Someone attacked us.”
Dominic did not lower his weapon.
“Who screamed?”
“I did.”
“Why?”
Claire pointed toward the open service door behind the wedding arch.
“A man came through there.”
“He hit Daniel.”
“He tried to take Harper.”
Harper’s face appeared beneath the tablecloth.
“That’s not true.”
Claire went still.
Dominic looked at the child.
Harper crawled out slowly.
Her eyes were red, but her voice was steady.
“Miss Claire turned off the lights.”
Claire stared at her.
“Sweetheart, you were frightened.”
“You did.”
Harper pointed to the candle.
“You already had fire before the lights went away.”
Dominic’s gaze shifted to the candle in Claire’s hand.
The wick had burned down nearly an inch.
She had lit it before the blackout.
Claire’s expression tightened.
“I heard the generators fail.”
“You had time to find a candle, light it, cross the house, and arrive before a child could scream?”
Dominic’s voice was calm.
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“You think I did this?”
“I found your sash in a tunnel beneath the cellar.”
Color left her face.
“What tunnel?”
“The one Nathan used after we found Mia.”
At Nathan’s name, Claire stepped backward.
“He is here?”
“You expected him to be gone?”
“No.”
She looked toward Mia.
“I expected him to finish what he started.”
Mia struggled to lift herself on the stretcher.
“Do not listen to her.”
Her voice was weak, but the hatred in it was not.
“She took me downstairs.”
Claire turned.
“Mia, you are confused.”
“You told me Dominic wanted the Château Margaux moved for the rehearsal.”
Mia’s breathing became uneven.
“You led me into the cellar.”
“You asked me what I had found in your desk.”
Claire’s tears vanished.
For half a second, her face became perfectly blank.
Dominic saw it.
So did Mia.
Then Claire looked wounded again.
“I never took you anywhere.”
“You wore silver heels.”
“I heard them on the iron steps.”
“You said Harper would grow up without a mother if I did not tell you where the ledger was.”
The room went silent.
Dominic lowered the muzzle slightly, not from trust but because the word mattered.
“What ledger?”
Mia looked at him.
“The wedding accounts.”
Claire laughed once, breathless and disbelieving.
“This is insane.”
Mia continued.
“Six weeks ago, I found duplicate invoices in the household office.”
“Flowers billed three times.”
“Wine shipments that never arrived.”
“Construction payments to companies that do not exist.”
Dominic remembered approving a larger wedding budget without reviewing the details.
He had trusted Claire.
He had trusted Nathan to supervise security.
He had trusted the people inside the house because his enemies were supposed to be outside it.
“How much?”
“Nearly twelve million dollars.”
Claire shook her head.
“You cannot believe this.”
Mia’s eyes stayed on Dominic.
“The money was not stolen.”
“It was being moved through the wedding vendors.”
“To where?”
“I only traced one company.”
“Black Briar Restoration.”
Dominic knew the name.
It had renovated the oldest wing of the estate after Isabella’s death.
Nathan had selected it.
Dominic looked toward the basement door.
A footstep sounded in the hall.
Daniel tried to stand, but Rowan forced him down.
Nathan entered with one hand raised.
Blood covered the shoulder of his shirt where Marcus had leaned against him.
Dominic aimed again.
Claire’s fear became real.
“You.”
Nathan looked at her candle.
“You always did love an entrance.”
“You locked Mia in that cellar.”
Claire’s voice cracked with fury.
Nathan did not deny it.
“I did.”
Harper moved closer to Mia.
Dominic took one step toward Nathan.
“Give me one reason not to kill you in front of everyone.”
“Because the woman standing behind you has a transmitter sewn into her blouse.”
Claire’s hand flew to her collar.
Dominic moved instantly.
He seized her wrist and turned her toward the wall.
Daniel’s men rushed in as emergency power flickered back to life.
Marcus, pale and bandaged, followed them.
A female guard cut the seam beneath Claire’s left shoulder.
Inside was a flat black disc no wider than a coin.
Claire stared at it in horror.
“I did not know that was there.”
Nathan smiled without humor.
“Of course not.”
Dominic ripped the transmitter free and crushed it beneath his heel.
“Search her.”
The guard found no weapon.
No phone.
No remote.
Only a tiny brass key taped beneath Claire’s watchband.
Mia saw it and inhaled sharply.
“That opens the desk.”
Claire turned toward her.
“What desk?”
“The one behind the false wall in your dressing room.”
Dominic looked at Claire.
She said nothing.
He ordered Daniel to secure the room and sent two guards to protect Harper.
Then he marched Claire, Nathan, and Mia’s stretcher through the mansion toward the bridal suite.
The estate looked unfamiliar under emergency lighting.
Every portrait seemed to watch them.
Every corridor appeared to contain another hiding place.
At the top of the grand staircase, Claire stopped.
“My room was searched yesterday.”
“By whom?” Dominic asked.
“I do not know.”
“You expect me to believe you noticed a search but told no one?”
“I thought Nathan was checking security.”
Nathan gave her a cold glance.
“You blamed me even before tonight.”
“I blamed you because you have been lying to Dominic for seventeen years.”
Dominic stopped walking.
“What lie?”
Claire looked at Nathan.
For the first time, the two of them seemed less like conspirators and more like enemies who had been forced into the same room.
Nathan’s jaw tightened.
“Do not.”
Claire’s eyes returned to Dominic.
“He was with Isabella the night she died.”
Dominic felt the hallway tilt beneath him.
Nathan had told him he arrived after the explosion.
He had claimed he pulled Dominic from the burning car and never saw Isabella because the passenger side had collapsed.
“Is that true?”
Nathan stared at Claire.
“She is trying to divide us.”
“That was not my question.”
Nathan looked at Dominic.
“Yes.”
The answer landed harder than a gunshot.
“I saw Isabella before the explosion.”
Dominic’s hand closed around Nathan’s collar.
“You told me you had not.”
“She made me promise.”
“To hide what?”
Nathan’s voice dropped.
“To hide the fact that the bomb was meant for her.”
Dominic slammed him against the wall.
“Why?”
“Because she had found the same ledger Mia found.”
The corridor went silent.
Mia looked between them.
Claire’s face had lost its certainty.
Even she had not expected that answer.
Dominic released Nathan slowly.
“Open the suite.”
The bridal bedroom had been painted ivory.
A half-finished wedding gown stood on a mannequin near the window.
Boxes of invitations covered the chaise.
Everything looked elegant, expensive, and harmless.
Mia pointed toward a full-length mirror.
“Behind that.”
Daniel pulled the mirror away from the wall.
A narrow door appeared.
The brass key fit the lock.
Inside was a hidden study no larger than a closet.
There was a desk, a shredder, three burner phones, and a wall covered with photographs.
Dominic stepped inside.
The photographs showed him leaving restaurants, entering court buildings, meeting senators, visiting Isabella’s grave, and standing alone at the river on the anniversary of her death.
Other photographs showed Harper at preschool.
Mia at the market.
Daniel outside his apartment.
Nathan meeting a woman Dominic did not recognize.
Claire remained in the doorway.
“This is not mine.”
Dominic opened the desk.
The top drawer held passports under different names.
The second held stacks of cash.
The third contained a leather ledger.
Mia’s eyes widened.
“That is it.”
Dominic opened to the first marked page.
Payments were listed by date and coded initials.
B.B.R.
N.C.
C.B.
D.V.
His own initials appeared beside transfers he had never authorized.
Then he saw another entry.
I.V. — extraction — August 17.
The date Isabella died.
Next to it was a single handwritten word.
Successful.
Dominic’s vision narrowed.
Claire leaned over his shoulder.
“What does it say?”
He closed the ledger before she could see.
A burner phone on the desk began to ring.
No one moved.
The screen displayed a blocked number.
Dominic answered and put it on speaker.
A woman’s voice filled the hidden room.
It was distorted, but calm.
“You found the first book.”
Dominic looked at Nathan.
Nathan looked genuinely shaken.
“Who are you?” Dominic asked.
“You have spent nine years mourning a lie.”
Dominic’s heartbeat slowed.
“What do you want?”
“The bird.”
Mia’s hand rose to the silver pendant at her throat.
The caller continued.
“Bring Mia Carter and the child to the old chapel before midnight.”
“Come alone.”
“If you fail, the woman you buried will die before sunrise.”
The call ended.
Dominic stared at the phone.
Harper’s small voice came from the hallway.
“Mr. Vale?”
He turned.
She was holding something in her palm.
A folded piece of paper shaped like a bird.
“I found this in Mommy’s room after she disappeared.”
Mia’s face filled with terror.
“Harper, do not open it.”
But the paper had already begun unfolding in the child’s hand.
Inside was a photograph of Isabella Vale.
She was standing beside Mia.
