Chapter 3 — The Secret Inside Grandpa's Will

The second recording wasn't from the kitchen.

It came from the family study.

Only three people had ever entered that room.

Emily.

Margaret.

And Emily's late father.

The screen showed Margaret standing beside an old wooden desk.

She wasn't alone.

Across from her stood Attorney Daniel Brooks.

He looked nervous.

"Mrs. Collins," he said quietly.

"You cannot destroy a legal will."

Margaret slid a thick envelope across the desk.

"You never saw this."

The lawyer refused to touch it.

"My client left Rosewood House to Emily and Harper."

Margaret smiled.

"They'll never know."

She opened the envelope herself.

Inside...

Grandpa's original handwritten will.

Without hesitation—

she dropped it into the fireplace.

Flames swallowed the paper.

Guests stared at the television in disbelief.

Someone whispered,

"She stole their inheritance..."

Emily couldn't breathe.

"My father..."

Margaret shook her head frantically.

"That isn't real!"

Attorney Brooks suddenly stood up from the back of the birthday party.

Nobody even knew he had been invited.

"I was waiting for the right moment."

He slowly removed a sealed document from his briefcase.

"The original wasn't destroyed."

"I made another certified copy."

Margaret froze.

Color drained from her face.

Then the front door burst open.

Two detectives walked inside.

One of them held an arrest warrant.

But they weren't looking at Margaret.

They were looking directly at Emily.

"We're sorry..."

"Someone accused you of financial fraud."

Emily stared in confusion.

"I've never—"

The detective interrupted.

"The evidence was anonymously submitted this morning."

Everyone slowly turned toward Margaret.

She smiled.
