CHAPTER 3 – WHAT WAS TAKEN

The truth didn’t come as a confession.

It came as fragments.

My mother finally spoke, her voice lower now, controlled but cracked at the edges.

“Sarah wasn’t alone after you left,” she said.

My chest tightened.

“She had help,” she continued. “Too much help. And not all of it was good for this family.”

Sarah shook her head immediately.

“I didn’t do anything,” she said, voice breaking. “I stayed here. I raised Jamie. I waited for him every single day.”

But my mother ignored her.

She turned the folder and showed me another page.

A hospital report.

A custody evaluation.

My name printed at the top, but not my signature anywhere in sight.

“Two years after you left,” my mother said, “social services got involved.”

I looked at the paper, then at Sarah.

Her face went pale.

“I never saw that,” she whispered.

Jamie stepped back slightly, sensing something dangerous without understanding it.

And then my mother said the sentence that froze everything.

“They said the child was living in unsafe conditions.”

Silence.

“Because I reported it.”

The air left the room.

Sarah staggered backward like she had been physically struck.

“You what?” I said, barely audible.

My mother didn’t flinch.

“I did what was necessary,” she replied. “You were gone. I protected your son.”

My mind couldn’t process it fast enough.

Protected?

From who?

From Sarah?

From poverty?

Or from something I hadn’t been told yet?

Prudence finally spoke, quieter now.

“You think you came home to a family,” she said. “But you came home to consequences.”
