CHAPTER 4 – THE ROOM BEHIND THE WALL

I walked back into the hidden room.

Not because I trusted them.

Because I needed proof.

The files weren’t just records anymore.

They were patterns.

Receipts of withdrawals.

Transferred accounts.

Medical claims.

And something else—something recent.

A second signature.

Dated only three months ago.

Sarah’s name again.

But this time, the document wasn’t about custody.

It was about consent.

Consent for Jamie to be placed under “temporary guardianship.”

My hand tightened around the paper.

“This is fake,” Sarah said immediately behind me, voice shaking violently. “I never signed that. I never gave anyone permission.”

My mother finally stepped into the room again.

Her voice softened, almost tired.

“You didn’t have to sign it directly,” she said. “You were already declared unfit.”

Jamie suddenly grabbed my shirt.

“Dad… what does unfit mean?”

That question destroyed something in me.

I knelt down slowly, holding him.

“It means nothing,” I said. “It means adults lie.”

But even as I said it, I felt the truth shifting under my feet.

Because the documents weren’t just accusations.

They were legal.

Stamped.

Approved.

And somewhere inside this house, someone had built an entire version of my life where I never existed as a father anymore.

Behind me, the party outside suddenly got louder again—laughing, clapping, celebrating something they believed was real.

My mother spoke one last time.

“You came home to fix what you think was broken,” she said quietly.

I stood up slowly.

“And what if it wasn’t broken?” I asked.

“What if it was replaced?”

The room went still.

Even Sarah stopped breathing.

And then, from the far end of the house, a door we hadn’t noticed before slowly creaked open on its own.

No one was standing there.

But the air coming from it felt cold.

Intentional.

Like something had been waiting for me to look inside.

And I realized then—

the truth wasn’t in the files.

May you like

It was behind that door.

And someone in this house had been waiting for me to find it.
